Relearn the definition of "recreational driving" by Jim In RI on 07/31/2006. Trim: 1999 BMW Z3 2.3 Roadster, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: The color. Silver ext with red on black interior. No woodgrain. Smooth clutch, close gate for shifting aids in acceleration. More refined than a corvette or camaro. Roll bars and ragtop boot makes her look really sleek. Timeless design. Looks better than any Z4 on the road. I cant park somewhere without getting a compliment. Plenty of rubbernecking. 2.5L engine still has enough get up and go to get the heart pounding, but doesnt really make me smile til just before redline.
Cons: No cupholders. Top will leak in heavy rain. This is common whether you own a 1996 1.9 or a 2001 m roadster. Quick and cheap solution, go to the nearest dicks or sports authority and buy yourself a tube of bowstring wax. Apply it to where the leak is. Be neat because it will get on the windows and smear when you up and down them, but a fair trade off to a saturated leather seat with power equip and sensors in it. Also, I live in RI, so she'll be stored (and missed) from NOV-MAY. 2.3 is a bit underpowered for my tastes. I may end up adding a supercharger. But I couldnt turn mine down when I saw it. Mint Condition, 50,000 miles, $17000. Cant beat it with a stick
Overall review: If you can afford a 3rd toy car, by all means purchase one. Inline six will last forever. Bmw quality for a fair price. And owning your very own roadster!!!!

Five Years and Counting. by An MSN Autos Consumer on 01/02/2004. Trim: 1999 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster, Owned 5 years.
Pros: The car handles very well, even in the winter. I have found the car is very well balanced (front and back), which improves handling. The styling is very distinctive and is a woman magnet. Adding Dinan chip to improve performance was well worth the $400, noticeable change in performance. Gas mileage not bad considering type of car 24 mpg. Like hardtop for winter. GPS has been a good feature.
Cons: The trunk can barely hold carry on bag size suit case. GPS disk player does also reduce trunk space. GPS uses a CD, not DVD, so only part of USA is covered. No bumper trim on sides, no protection from door dents. Dealer service not as good as my Toyota was. Never can fix things the first time, always never having part. Problems have been minor so far.
Overall review: Like the car and would like to keep it for 10 years. Have to watch reliability moving forward. Likely to buy Z4 in future.

Loved It, Hated It by Hot Rod from Foresthill on 06/12/2003. Trim: 1999 BMW Z3 2.3 Roadster, Owned 3 years.
Pros: The Z3 is a great looking car. It gets a lot of positive comments. On a sunny day, it's fun to take a drive in the mountains or countryside. It speeds up effortlessly and easily.
Cons: In the 3 years I've owned it, the top has leaked and been repaired three times. The seats are miserable to sit in for drives over 2 hours. It gets very hot inside the car even when the air conditioner is running. You can't hear the radio most of the time because of the noise level. The paint chips very easily. The shocks on the rear had to be replaced when it was 3 years old.
Overall review: Driving the Z3 with the top down through the mountains is a thrill. The car has to be babied to keep it looking decent and running well. It's a great Sunday driver!

Sweet and sour by Obsessed Ozzie on 07/12/2001. Trim: 1999 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Looks, looks looks! Good performance, reasonable ride, range of standard equipment, build quality, nice electric lid, retains good resale value.
Cons: Only one thing really - that dreadful steering. Feels dead most of the time, then it really comes alive with a mind of its own when you hit anything but a smooth surface - tram lining, wandering, squirming - you name it, it does it! Steering geometry or power steering, I don't know, but it needs some BMW boffin to come up with an answer.
Overall review: All up it's a beautiful car. I thought about changing after a few months of that steering, but what else is there at the price with a soft top and those looks?
