Maintenance Headache3
by Unhappy in Chicago on 02/11/2007.
Trim: 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK CLK 320, Owned 9 years.

Pros:
Nice looking small coupe with good performance.
Cons:
Very disappointed in the quality of manufacture and reliability. Wheels replaced in first year due to corrosion problem of Aluminum (slow leaks). Broke harmonic balancer during driving with 35K miles, Sunroof would not open (Foam panel sound board fell down inside roof), outside temp reads only in minus, ball joints with less than 50K miles, Oxygen Sensors bad and many more problems. All with less than 50K miles, but out of warranty time. Had to fight with Mercedes to get the Harmonic Balancer paid. Very bad customer relation.
Overall review:
Great styling at Mercedes, but no thanks, headache is not worth it and finacially, this car gets very expensive to keep running. The replacement will not be a Mercedes.

'98 CLK320

Pros:
Great styling. Excellent performance and handling (weight distrib., accel/torque, and brakes). Seats very comfortable. Smart systems. Very, very driveable.
Cons:
Wish it had rack-and-pinion steering. 17" AMG rims recommended for the performance-minded.
Overall review:
Unbeatable combination of performance, looks, and luxury for the money. Well-mannered in town, in the mountains, and at three-digit speeds, deceptively so. Performance and handling w/ESP is simply outstanding- makes good drivers out of mediocre ones. Taking some pro driving lessons may help to fully appreciate the CLK. Multi-contour seats very comfortable. BMW and Lexus, no matter what people may tell you, just aren't the same (been there). Find one with ESP option (standard on newer yrs.) and with multi-contour seats. Service it regularly, but expect to pay for it...

A Very Thorough Review
by Scott Fields, Richmond VA on 07/14/2002.
Trim: 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK CLK 320, Owned 1 year.

Pros:
Styling first. With a V6, it can have a lower hood and sleeker appearance than the BMW 3 series coupe which has a boxy look because of the upright inline6. With 3.2 litres it also has more torque than the 330ci. It is also the lightest 6cyl 4seat coupe on the market with the exception of the 911, MustangV6, and BMW325ci. Rigid chassis and solid feel. Has practical passenger and cargo space, too. Good fuel economy.
Cons:
Poor steering feel because no rack-and-pinion. No manual transmission? The next version of the CLK will be bigger, heavier, and slower (but will have rack and pinion), so get this one. Tires and wheels not big enough. You should add 17 or 18 inch wheels. I put on 18inch AMG Monoblocs. This has given better looks an handling.
Overall review:
It's more expensive but much more exclusive than coupes by BMW, Acura, and others. The CKL320 is the cheapest MB coupe (We don't count the little C-Coupe!), but it still costs more than the MOST expensive coupes from other companies, so it gives you much more exclusivity for a somewhat higher price. And oh that style and quality! It's a bargain.

Classy and sporty

Trim: 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK CLK 320, Owned 5 years.

Pros:
Styling, handling, interior & trunk space. I also like the fact that it's not an overly common car (like a VW Jetta).
Cons:
CD isn't standard equipment, cup holder isn't stable
Overall review:
I love this car. I've had it for 4 years, but every time I go to get into it I'm still excited about driving it. I get a lot of compliments on it and I plan to replace it with the exact same model and color in a 2002 model when the lease is up.
