Only Marque to have!! by An MSN Autos Consumer on 02/19/2011. Trim: 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E320, Owned 10 years.
Pros: Graet quality overall - fun (and comfortable) to drive - fast and safe - I have 165,000 + miles on this car and the engine burns no oil and the tranny still works fine
Cons: Costs of repair
Overall review: My third MB includiing 1 1980 300D that had 320,000 miles when I sold it - still ran great but it was a bad year for transmissions -

Nice car (poor Mercedes) by An MSN Autos Consumer on 10/24/2007. Trim: 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300D, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Gas mileage, for a very comfortable and 4000lb car the efficiency is excellent and runs fine on biodiesel. The handling is better than expected for a car of this size, and the compromise between handling and comfort is just about perfect. The reputation for longevity of the mechanicals (particularly the inline diesel engines) is well-deserved, though owners would be well-served to ignore the "lifetime" transmission fluid and change it every two years.
Cons: Build quality on par with an early Hyuandai or a Yugo and Mercedes supports the car like a unwelcome houseguest. Early W210 models had a couple of well-known issues. First is the front spring perch rust, repairs of which run from hundreds to many thousands. A failure may simply immobilize the car or the front spring and perch may be ejected from the car taking portions of the framerail with it. Visual inspection is often insufficient without removing rustproofing. Second is the blower motor regulator, which Mercedes has elected to cease production of as a replacement part. The factory recommended fix is to replace the entire blower motor also, close to $1000 fix for a $140 part.
Overall review: Research the cars very carefully before buying and look really carefully for the known problems, there is plenty of information on the web (search for mercedes or W210 forums). Any pre-purchase inspection should be done by someone familiar with the issues particular to this car. Despite the rather harsh quality rating I gave these can be great cars to own, and even better to drive, but be prepared to keep up with the maintenance. Access to a good mechanic that specializes in MB is almost a prerequisite. The dealers are just shy of useless (think $7000 for a rebuilt transmission in a car that is worth maybe $11000) and, as stated earlier, Mercedes support for the car is poor.

Believe the Hype by Vegas Wms, N Utah on 08/21/2007. Trim: 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E420, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Acceleration, handling, solidity, cabin space, ergonomics
Cons: Flimsy cup holder, no lumbar support, smallish trunk, expensive parts, some parts/fluids ONLY available at the dealer (that's NOT open on weekends)
Overall review: Wanted the 97 E420 since it is the only yr for this body and the 4.2 V8. Had the car for about three months and have put over 3k miles on it already...and this is primarily driving only on the weekends. STRONG acceleration w/ the V-8 (although my Seville STS "feels" faster; and a Benz WILL do a burn-out). Handling is outstanding when not driving at the limit. Don't worry about that the automotive press says the BMW 540i handles better; if you're wringing out that last bit of performance, you DON'T need to be on the street; take it to the track. It's a great highway cruiser w/ decent highway fuel economy especially for a V-8. I don't like the flimsy cup-holder and wish I had adjustable lumbar support. So far reliable although I did need to replace a wheel bearing and the radiator (do yourself a favor an get an extended warranty). Search the internet for parts and for routine maintenance (oil change, etc avoid the dealership and save $). I definitely see another Benz in my future.
