B-M-Trouble-U by BA from Lafayette, CA on 06/29/2004. Trim: 1998 BMW 740i, Owned 3 years.
Pros: Beautiful car and fun to drive.
Cons: Problems, problems, problems...nothing but problems
Overall review: Not worth the trouble or expense. Way to many things go wrong and everything is expensive to fix.

Magnificent car, but a lot of maintenance by JD400 from North Carolina on 12/22/2002. Trim: 1998 BMW 740iL, Owned 2 years.
Pros: Wonderful heavy, powerful car. I'm still awed by the controlled power of this beast. Just breathtaking to feel how smoothly and quickly it gets all that weight up to speed. Handles beautifully, great ride, extremely comfortable on long trips. Lots of useful conveniences. Top-notch safety and security features. Good gas mileage (20 mpg) for such a big car.
Cons: Lot of problems for such an expensive car with only 70,000 miles. Power steering hoses have been replaced twice; engine starting burning oil at 70,000 miles requiring replacement of intake manifold gasket and oil separator; catalytic converter replaced (under warranty); interior/exterior trim pieces are always coming loose; flimsy cupholders break easily. I have a 10 year old Camry that has cost a total of $1000 in repairs (outside of routine oil changes, brakes, etc.) since since I bought it new. I've spent twice that in the past 6 months on the BMW. Glad I kept the Camry - comes in handy for all the times the BMW is in the shop.
Overall review: A wonderful luxury car to own and drive. I think it's more interesting to drive and better looking than a comparable Mercedes or Lexus. But if my experience is an indicator, expect to become pretty good friends with your local BMW mechanic. Still, I'd buy it again.

The ultimate non-drivable machine! by Pedro from Guaynabo on 05/12/2007. Trim: 1998 BMW 740i, Owned 8 years.
Cons: Electrical problems, emission controls problems, weak front suspension, sun roof problems, headliner collapsing, driver seat upholstery looks extremely worn, poor gas mileage. Extermely expensive to repair. And all this in a "car" that has always been stored inside and has 38,000 on the odometer!
Overall review: Stay away from this "turkey"!

A Budget Bentley with an attitude by Mattssss on 07/15/2009. Trim: 1998 BMW 740iL, Owned 1 year.
Pros: I have never found another luxury car that rides as smooth as this car...ive driven the XJ vanden plas, s-class merc, DTS, Lincoln TC, Lexus LS, and bentley Arnage (which by the way shares the 4.4L engine, trans, suspension, and almost everything else with the 740il...) and nothing has yet to compare on ride, quality, or handling. Also...the church setting on the stereo is amazing...and the tv was cool till digital killed it the back seat has the room of a limo...a pretty good accomplishment for a normal 4-door...
Cons: who thought a plastic radiator was a good idea on a high temp v-8?? and my headliner is starting to function as a hat...my front struts died...granted it's hauling around a cathedral on its springs but still... and my rear windows are not functional...
Overall review: why buy a bentley arnage (which i almost sold my 7 to buy one...like a month ago) when you can you can get the same thing and ppl wont key it in the parking lot? BMW is the best engineered brand i know of...i never question the quality of a beemer...and this vehicle re-affirms this.

Great car even after 10+ years by NolaSicilian on 05/30/2009. Trim: 1998 BMW 740iL, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Great performance, great ride, nice features, even after 10+ years its still a head turner, and a classic BMW
Cons: Repair cost. Dealership wanted $1840 for LABOR alone, to install a new radiator. Radiator itself was over $500
Overall review: The 1998 BMW 740iL is a wonderful vehicle. It's a very good car with great comforts and the usual excellent BMW performance. The vehicle however is very prone to electrical issues, just search online and you will see.
