A great little van. by An MSN Autos Consumer on 06/13/2013. Trim: 1997 Mazda MPV, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: It's a good useful utility vehicle. easy access through full width rear door.
Cons: The rear seats don't fold down flat.
Overall review: This is one of the best vehicles I've ever owned, Bought it in 2001 with 54000KMs on it. Very little but regular maintenance required. It's the Special sport edition 2 wheel drive.

breaking the bank by Shannonhb on 01/06/2007. Trim: 1997 Mazda MPV ES 2WD, Owned 7 years.
Pros: Love the fact that it does not have sliding van doors, roomy and comfortable. The front seats convert into chaises when lowered and locked in with the back seats. very cool.
Cons: I have owned my 97 MPV since 2000, baught it with 24,000 miles on it. Within a year of purchase I had to put a new transmission in it. Twice it sent me into on coming traffic because the accellorator stuck. Some kind of stearing glitch is extremely dangerous at slow speed turns. Less than two years after the first transmission was replaced I had to buy another one. Now, 3 years later I need a new one. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall review: DEPRESSING, to say the least.

mazda mpv 1997 inexpensive dependable by robert spokane on 07/15/2013. Trim: 1997 Mazda MPV LX 4WD, Owned 4 years.
Pros: inexpensive, has been reliable bought @ 105k miles now 160k. transmission cooler has probably saved it from breaking. roomy for tall family. wife likes because it doesnt look like a van. 4wd is great even in 3 ft of snow. easy to work on dual zone climate control. tow package automatic load leveller, can tow a couple tons but would be careful not to overtax tranny. very sturdy and safe feeling
Cons: little cargo room, moderate fuel consumption 15-21 mpg, easy to steal, driver seat wore out, "glitch/short" in rear brake light and trailer lights, leaks oil from pcv and smokes. can only fit 235 r 115 tires on it. would look better with slightly bigger tires but wheel wells are too small. heard transmissions can be unreliable but ours has been great probably because of factory tranny cooler. automatic load levelling shocks went out and had to replace them with non oem air shocks. hydraulic timing belt tensioner went out. it was a fairly easy do it your self but was a pain because the shop used a cheap tensioner.
Overall review: love it. roomy, has been dependable for us. gets family to my folks house in the snowy mountains in winter sometimes through 2 and 3 feet of snow up a mountain road. good in mud too. it;s like the subaru of minivans, dependable, inexpensive , no frills, and 4wd. not much cargo space behind the third seat but with a rooftop carrier there is plenty of room. tow package is nice, tranny cooler is a must for these things and periodic partial flush of the fluid.
