97 Mazda Protege LX Still happy after all these years!!!!! by Miss Turry on 11/20/2011. Trim: 1997 Mazda Protege LX, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: I bought this car used with 200k miles on it. I had to replace the struts, but that was it. The rest of the car is excellent. I love it. It has great horepower for its size, rides and drives nicely and I still get 32-37 mpg out of the thing. Thats amazing for its age and mileage.
Cons: Cup holders too small and in an odd spot for a manual shift. Otherwise, like everything else.
Overall review: Great car. Would buy another if they still made them. Would consider buying a new Mazda if/when I decided to buy new again.

97' lx 1.5l auto by Ben Tucson,az on 05/24/2012. Trim: 1997 Mazda Protege LX, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Economy, Seating, Style compared to others in same year and class,Engine and transmission and ac reliability,Easy to work on,Easy to drive, Great turning radius,Power mirrors, door looks and windows. Driver and passenger airbags
Cons: Iwould have been nicer with a lil more power, and its a lil noisy on the road but dont really effect all the good things about the car like 35-40mpg still even after 133,000k. only true bad thing is the gearing on the auto trans
Overall review: Great car that runs forever, Would make perfect first car for students or second car to have . Mine has 133k but still runs great starts good no leaks no smoking and everything still works

Mazda is NIGHTMARE!!! by A friendly voice in the wilderness, Siani on 07/31/2003. Trim: 1997 Mazda Protege LX, Owned 4 years.
Pros: Mostly quality stuff, but the engine really sucks.
Cons: The engine has had so many problems, I don't think I can adequately describe them all. There was something wrong with the hydralic lifters and camshaft (i was told), only after 3000 miles, and ever since those were replaced, the engine check light came on several times, a hole (a manufacturing defect) was found in the valve cover, the oxygen sensor became defective, engine over heated twice.
Overall review: This is a nightmare car, and I don't ever want to own a Mazda again!

Not up to par by Pam from Mankato, MN on 07/25/2003. Trim: 1997 Mazda Protege DX, Owned 6 years.
Pros: a different styling (relatively speaking), nice dashboard implementation.
Cons: Too much brake fade which gives me the creepy feeling (never got used to this), uninspiring handling at freeway speeds, too much wind noise and road noise, lack of lumbar support (seat is too soft in the low back area), bad reflection from the dashboard cover on the windshield, low roofline which creates too much blindspots, very quirky clutch (too long and heavy) which doesn't line up with the brake and the gas pedals, poor gas mileage.
Overall review: I bought the car on a whim, not having tried the new Honda Civic and the best-selling Toyota Corolla, and now I wish I had taken my time with this investment. Compared to the Civic, my fully loaded Protege doesn't perform as smooth and competently in virtually every aspect of the ride, handling, quietness, steering agility, etc. There are few more gimmicky features, but those are not the important features in the long run. Take a good look at the new Honda Civic EX before making a mistake.
