Loving the 840 by An MSN Autos Consumer on 02/08/2008. Trim: 1997 BMW 840Ci, Owned 2 years.
2
Pros: This car is one of the most beautiful ever built! I love the rarity of this model and its unique looks. It is a head-turner no matter where I go. It is also an excellent cruising machine, made for wide open highways and sweeping turns.
Cons: Since it is an older car, it requires more maintenance to keep in top condition. Parts are sometimes hard to come by. Do not buy this car if you don't have a good reserve of money available for repairs. (And a spare car to drive!)
Overall review: With a few tweaks and modifications, many of the trouble areas of this car can be minimized. If you like working on bimmers, this is a good choice for you. The best part about owning an 8-series is the community of owners. Get involved with them! Despite the friendly ribbing between 850 and 840 owners, make no mistake that the M62 V8 can hold its own against the 'big-boy' V12s. They each have their pros and cons, but each is a joy to own and drive.

Beem me up Scottie! by Mr. Ron on 03/04/2005. Trim: 1997 BMW 850Ci, Owned 1 year.

Pros: I always loved this car. It was the first BMW that I actually liked back in 1990. Everything about this car is amazing! Very cool to drive.
Cons: The fact that I had to wait so long to be able to afford it. But I found an awesome one.
Overall review: Superb car! Find one that's in good shape and you'll love it too.

BMW 8 series(e31) by Car Lover from N.E. Ohio on 10/12/2009. Trim: 1997 BMW 840Ci, Owned 2 years.

Pros: Styling is sleek and timeless. 840 shines on the open road, power to spare. true Gran Tourer!
Cons: Driver leg room and i wish it had the smaller sport steering wheel.
Overall review: Preventive maintenance is key, this is a vehicle that you will not see at every stoplight, and this alone makes it a joy!

THE FAST AND THE LUXURIOUS by keith on 04/04/2008. Trim: 1997 BMW 840Ci, Owned 2 years.
1
Pros: Timeless styling. This car always turns heads and often people ask what it is. The handling is great, performance shines at highway speeds. 0-60 is okay for a 4200 lb car but 50-110 is where this beauty really leaves others in its wake. The ride, comfort, and safety are unsurpassed. If you are looking for a rare, classic automoibile, that is fast, fun and draws attention, look no further. One other plus is on highway trips, I continuously get over 25 mpg.
Cons: Not a lot of things to dislike. The back seat is great for luggage, golf clubs, or other parafanalia but it is really a two seater. The 8 series has some common quirks like the adjustment cables for the auto seats get out of whack, the pixel lights go out on the OBC, and if you only drive the car on weekends and leave it unattended for weeks, the batteries can go dead. But if you practice preventitive maintenance like trickle charge the batteries, replace hoses and belts, and other small PM things, this car will not leave you stranded. Parts are readily available and there are many sources and helpful forums for the mechanically challenged like myself.
Overall review: This is not a muscle car or a kit car that you see every day. This is a rare beauty that does everything well, and will start becoming a collectable. It is fast, handles fabulously, and has creature comforts you'ld expect in an $80K plus auto. The survivors have ended up in the hands of true enthusiasts so they are making a strong come back. I would recommend this to someone who wants attention and expects superb performance. With a few mods the 840 will run with 850 but it is less expensive to maintain. Handling and looks are equal.

1998 850 ciA NOT AVAILABLE IN NORTH AMERICA by Fayez, Dubai, United Arab Emirates on 02/25/2005. Trim: 1997 BMW 850Ci, Owned 1 year.
1
Pros: Mine is a '98. Made for the Arabian Gulf 850 ciA. The timeless classic sports shape. The sound of the egine and how everything is driver centric. Luxurious hand stitched leather. GSM phone. AWSOME sound system RDS Pro. The headlights, Oh, the best looking car front ever!
Cons: about 25% more expensive maintenance than what am used to paying.
Overall review: Comfy for a two-door (coupe) but not straight forward for kids. If you're taller than 6 feet forget about an adult sitting in the back seat behind you. The car screams more even at 260 km/hr handles like a dream but make sure you don't go el-cheapo on tires.
