Automatic 1988 626 sedan by An MSN Autos Consumer on 11/20/2010. Trim: 1988 Mazda 626 DX sedan, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Looks wise the car is fairly good, provided you like smaller sedans. The stock wheels are pretty terrible however, and if you care about the appearance of the car at all you would be well off to replace them. The car handles well in addition to braking well.
Cons: Power out of the automatic transmission is terrible. If possible, avoid this transmission at all costs. Its barely worthy as a boat anchor, let alone a transmission in a car. Also, avoid the use of the HOLD button, its a surefire way to destroy your transmission. The interior is also rather generic and unappealling, though it can be improved with other parts
Overall review: A decent car for a point a point b vehicle, provided it has the 5 speed standard transmission. The auto is garbage and not worth buying

A Very Good Vehicle by Phil on 05/19/2009. Trim: 1988 Mazda 626 LX sedan, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: Had our 1988 Mazda 626 for over 20 years and have experienced only routine maintenance on it. Clutch lasted to 310000 miles - almost unheard of for most cars. The engine head gasket blew at 320000 miles and decided to replace engine with a used engine. Currently the vehicle has 375000 miles on it and still consistently gets 35-37 mpg on the highway with a 2.2 liter engine and 5-speed manual transmission. Styling holds it own even after 20 years.
Cons: Automatic seat belt restraints, which were mandatory in 1988, have always worked poorly. Auto door locks eventually failed due to the irrepairable electrical switches in the doors. No other significant problems other than routine maintenance. A remarkably solid car.
Overall review: Many people chose this car over the equivalent Toyota Camry of the era. If you are lucky enough to find one in good condition and has not been abused, don't hesitate to buy it. For a car this old, it would be best to stick with a 5-spd and not an automatic transmission.

dependable by steve on 05/31/2006. Trim: 1988 Mazda 626 DX sedan, Owned 8 years.
Pros: very dependable, have had it since 1999, and got it from women that I had relationship with and who was the original owner-- gets decent gas mileage--have put little $ into vehicle--not fancy but it gets you where you need to go--the electical and muffler systems have been the biggest problems, but not that bad overall
Cons: gettin' old, like me
Overall review: good, dependable vehicle

Great little cheep to keep car by Sammiebuck on 02/23/2006. Trim: 1988 Mazda 626 LX sedan, Owned 7 years.
Pros: This has been a very reliable little car. I have 197400 mikes on it and it keeps on going. It doesnt look great but I have no car payment either and very little chance of it being stolen from me. This is the standard shift 5 speed model. Not bad for an 18 year old car.
Cons: The sunroof leeks like a sive!!! Had to tape it closed.
Overall review: I would buy another one!!!!

Solid Performer by An MSN Autos Consumer on 06/03/2005. Trim: 1988 Mazda 626 DX sedan, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: manual transmission. I have this car since I purchased it new in 1987. Never failed a smog test, even the more recent stringent CA emission standards. gets great mileage (35mpg city/hwy combined). Although old, the styling is such that it does not look dated compared to equivalent Camry/Accords. mechanically very sound. great low RPM torque, gives you the sense of power even if the hp rating doesn't depict it (110hp, but I will take the acceleration/torque on this car over the wimpy 140hp civic or corollas any time). low maintenance. Thick metal platings--feels very heavy and solid. will comfortably seat a 6'6" person withplenty of legroom in the back. Large cargo
Cons: electrically, little things has gone bad. But once fixed, I have not had any problems.
Overall review: I see this model car on the road a lot still. It shows how reliable this car is, and is rugged and robust enough to pass the test of time.
