Still beats out New "sport sedans and coupes"! by e30 e34 e36 best of the bavarians on 02/08/2012. Trim: 1996 BMW 328i, Owned 1 year.

Pros: Once you own and drive quality all other cars will feel like your older brothers first car, utter garbage on wheels. The turning dynamics, how the car hugs the road, at 3000 lbs the car is on the light side of the new generation vehicles from 2005- and on. Cars are only getting bigger and fatter, the E36 has great visibility!!!! hardly any blind spots. 25MPG 135MPH limiter...could be 146MPH with software tune. 6500K rpm limiter could be 7000 rpm limiter with software " " Get the sport seats, the leather seats are comfortable. GET good tires!!! Do not cheap out on parts!!! Again take care of your bavarian race horse and she will grant you pleasurable moments on the road!!
Cons: Dont trust just any shop with your car!! Learn your car systems, do it yourself on most jobs. Buy german parts, not cheap alternatives.... leather gets hot in summer and cold at winter. bad driver side front head on collision protection!<<<fails where new cars make the grade.(all other occupants are safe in all other crashes.) electric problems get crazy, first culprit check your battery, check the date!!!
Overall review: Learn your car, do your research. you can troubleshoot many things on your own. get a good mechanic you trust. see where new parts were installed on your car!! just be mindful of people, don't trust just anyone to work on your car, let alone trust yourself. It's not like an early 90's ford or japanese equivalent, many of the systems have been engineered with complex systems, repairing systems require special tools sometimes like RTAB, and cooling fan removal. 36mm oil filter socket required for oil changes!! once you go german you won't want to drive any other car. The e36 328i sport package sedan with 5 speed manual is quicker than e90 328i so know where you lie in power 100mph comes fairly quick.

E36 328i in a nutshell by Kody 0010 on 06/06/2010. Trim: 1996 BMW 328ic, Owned 5 years.
2
Pros: The excitement and performance this late model can still kick out. BMW's dont hold thier resale value as well as some of the other european auto's, if you can find one that's been taken care of, you can pick up a +100k model for less than you would expect.
Cons: Vader black seats in the summertime, the acceloration isn't what it could be.
Overall review: The BMW 328i is a wonderful car. It can still get the looks that you want. Also when you're behind the wheel you feel confident to engage in "spirited driving".

Reliable pocket rocket! by Douglas L. on 12/11/2009. Trim: 1996 BMW 328i, Owned 5 years.
2
Pros: Still dust brand new A3 2T, Passats and Japaneses, easily reaches 146 mph top speed. Get 24 MPG doing 90-95mph highway (manual tram). Pleasure to drive. Good overal quality, put 90K on it almost trouble free. Just do the regular maintenance, always use fully synthetic oil on changes and super gas and she will reward you with evertyhing a sporty, performance oriented driver wants.
Cons: Crampy back seats (c'mon, it's not a full size sedan...), over 5 years of ownership had to change a water and fuel pump, door rubber trim (driver's side), front brake discs and some minor suspension arms further to regular maintenance. Run away from dealership! Find a good technician and buy parts from Autohausaz, OEM parts at very reasonalble prices and excelent service.
Overall review: Before consider a used do a very good search: look for maintenance records, take the car to a good mechanic (maybe a dealership), throughly examine it. Do a good test drive. The car delivers great performance, will dust most of other "sport" cars while doing a decent gas mileage, reliable and a pleasure to drive.

Not Quite the "Ultimate Driving Machine by Mr. Had-Alotta-Cars from San Ramon, Ca. on 11/20/2002. Trim: 1996 BMW 318ti, Owned 6 years.

Pros: Sporty handling and a rev happy 4 cylinder engine. Very good fit and finish for the body. Excellent handling through canyon switch backs with very taut suspension. Lots of fun aftermarket parts from Bavarian Auto Works, Dinan, Active Autowerks and a dynamite BMW Car club.
Cons: Anemic, "wake me up when I hit 75mph" acceleration. My V6 Honda Accord will kill in a straight line. Extemely high maintenance costs, $700 for an Inspection 2 for a 4 cylinder????!!!!!!!!!!! $358 for my V6 Honda Accord. $26,000 new and costs as much as my 2000 Accord EX-V6 w/leather. Oh well, it's my forth Bimmer...2002, 320i, 525i. It must be that Blue and White roundel on the hood that gets me
Overall review: If you like great handling, great structural integrity, great aftermarket parts and can handle the great costs to keep it running at its best while not in a hurry to get to the local Starbucks to spend $4 for a Vente Latte, Mocha, etc. then go for it!

The quick and comfortable sports sedan by Zach Charlotte, NC on 01/26/2011. Trim: 1996 BMW 328i, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros: This model in particular has a very powerful motor, although it is a 3,000 pound car, it will get up and go. Very comfortable and is great to drive, wouldn't mind taking it across country.
Cons: The automatic transmission is a problem in this car, after about 150,000 miles its life will run out. This just recently happened to me and am swapping it out for the 5 speed.
Overall review: Great Car in 5 speed. Very comfortable, good family car
