This one's a keeper! by An MSN Autos Consumer on 12/06/2009. Trim: 1995 BMW 530i, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: My first BMW, and will never go back to boring Japanese imports. For a 15 year old car with 160,000 miles, I am amazed at how well this car performs. It's been reliable so far, but did replace a few things due to normal wear and tear. I saved a ton of money by doing the work myself, and by finding parts online. I'm averaging 23 mpg with mix highway and city driving, and can get 30 on the highway! In sports mode, the acceleration is exhilarating, and it handles and rides like a dream. The interior is very luxurious with good quality leather and wood grain trim.
Cons: I don't like the auto. transmission, it likes to search for gears a lot. Sports mode works great, but at the cost of fuel economy. There are also a lot of plastic parts used, such as the plastic radiator.
Overall review: This is a great BMW that will continue to run for a long time with regular maintenance. If you're considering buying this car, make sure it has the Alusil engine and not the Nikasil engine because there were major problems with deterioration due to high sulfur gasoline. Never go to the stealerships to get work done as it will cost a fortune. Either go to a trusted mechanic, or do the work yourself.
