Arguably the toughest modern SUV on the market by Mark in Wisconsin on 12/30/2011. Trim: 1998 Land Rover Discovery LE, Owned 5 years.
Pros: Very well built mechanically. Tough suspension and steering system. Built like a real truck yet rides better than most SUVs.
Cons: Large turning radius for a short wheelbase vehical.
Overall review: Typical British quirks such as slow fluid leaks and electrical issues that do not make any sense. But over 5 years and 40,000 miles (135,000 on it total) with no major problems at all. Just normal service.

Safari Anyone? by J from Bellingham on 05/17/2013. Trim: 1998 Land Rover Discovery, Owned 4 years.
Pros: Strong incredibly capable off-roader while also being a comfortable and smooth daily driver. If you a do-it yourself kind of person you will find that discos are a very easy truck to work on (they are designed to be repaired in the field) unlike most more modern vehicles which can be nightmares. They also have many unqiue engineering fetures that make them unqiue from other SUVs like the aluminum body panels and engine, full freefloating axles, 3 fans and the massive 5.5in bolt spacing on the wheels(spindles and axles are from the military defender). Both of my discos have over 150xxx miles and are both still running strong.
Cons: They definitely have their British quirks but also understand that BMW also helped fix many of the stereotypical reliability issues that stemmed from British Leyland. They are probably going to leak a bit of fluids but nothing major. Some Parts can be expensive while other are wierdly cheap compared other cars. The drive train is very much bullet proof with only really the water pump and some sensors being the only real problem. One thing I do want to stress though is do not overheat the engine( with 3 fans and the massive radiator its hard to do) because it can permently damage the block.
Overall review: You are never going to dislike your Landrover. If you are looking for a SUV that stands out from the rest and has a ton of character look no further. It is really a strange phenomenon when you drive a Land Rover is that it has a sense of purpose; you could going for groceries or driving through the sahara what ever you are doing it makes it feel important. It can look good anywhere covered in mud on a farm or outside a high-end resturaunt. Its just cool

Definition of the True SUV by Boon on 10/30/2005. Trim: 1998 Land Rover Discovery LE, Owned 2 years.
Pros: Its great. You can sit up so high. Its got great pickup when you shift manually. Seats are comfortable no matter how long the trip is. And who can argue with two moon roofs!
Cons: Nothing. Its an SUV, and it handles like an SUV. SUV's should not handle like cars!!
Overall review: So Amazing. The discovery was my first car, and i will never own anything but a Land Rover, even if gas is up to $10 a gallon, i will stick with my discovery!

Ultimate Truck...for some... by CFD, Greensboro, NC on 08/27/2002. Trim: 1998 Land Rover Discovery LE, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Great looking. Very good handling. Safe, rugged and great interior. I like the two sunroofs and quality of interior. Jump seats are great for kids. Fun vehicle with lots of looks and character. Great car for taking ski trips, camping, running around town.
Cons: I bought this vehicle with 21,000 miles from a dealer. Dealer has been great. The vehicle has been in the shop a total of 15 times in 13 months. 5 of these were scheduled maintenance and the rest were warranty repairs. The transfer casing clunks. I have argued with LRover; however they mainatain this is normal. Rocker arms replaced, rear seals replaced in tranny, sunroofs repaired 3x, heated seats repaired, etc...and the list goes on. Not a good highway car. One will get passed over and over again. Cruise control has been repaired 3 times.
Overall review: You really need to know what you are getting into on these trucks. Be ready to pay to play. If you are looking for an inexpensive vehicle to maintain, forget this one. My advice is to have another dependable vehicle for use when this one is in the shop.
