Ultimate Junk by Nick and Pat on 07/18/2005. Trim: 2000 Volkswagen Golf GL 2.0, Owned 5 years.
1
Pros: Stylish, interior and exterior
Cons: Horrible vehicle from start to finish. From the day of purchase till we got rid of it was nothing but problems. A/C failures, transmission failures, radiator failures, electrical failures, interior equipment would chip and break too easily. Literally the last 2 years we had it, we never washed it because it would get washed at the dealership every other weekend when it was there for servicing. DO NOT BUY OR WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON VW’s. The dealership practicaly knew as at the end
Overall review: STAY AWAY FROM VW

Pros: Solid structure. Good Michelin Tires, mileage, quiet. Well engineered diesel engine.
Cons: Bits and pieces in interior are not up to snuff. Some creaking after 40K miles.
Overall review: A good car all around.

Here's my 12,000 mile update...[in 4 months! YIKES!] :) by Dan in Cherryville, NC on 05/03/2001. Trim: 2000 Volkswagen Golf GLS 2.0, Owned 1 year.

Pros: The car, like all other VWs, has a charming personality that no other mfr can muster at all. It's top-notch all the way around, and if you can dodge the gremlins that some VWs are born with, then you will have a friend for life. This is probably my 7th VW in almost 20 yrs of driving, with others in-between. To date, 0 rttls, sqks, probs, blems, NOTHING but perfection. I've had a 'bad' Golf in the past, broke down the 1st time I drove it into my driveway and went downhill from there, and, yes, VWoA wasn't the most helpful corp to deal with by any means, but I do believe in their product, if not in their Co. entirely. Had zillions of probs w/my Cirrus LXi I repl it with.
Cons: I kind-of feel like it doesn't have enough grunt when I have an extra passenger or more in the vehicle, but all-in-all, I can't complain. Other than being just a tad weak [for a car that's as heavy as a tank, it's stong as heck!], I have zero complaints. Oh yeah! As I said in my initial rating here, my 6' 200# frame just *CAN'T* get perfectly comfortable behind the wheel, like I could in my larger Chrysler Cirrus LXi. Either my feet are too far away, or my right leg is ALWAYS painfully up against the console [a gripe from my other Golfs also] or my arms are stretched too far, even with the wheel pulled as close to me as possible...always one concession to be made for my comfort.
Overall review: When that kid on the Mazda commercial says "Zoom zoom!", he must see me coming down the 'pike as the Miatas scatter. The car flies, even given it's mini-minivan-like shape and small motor. It has no qualms running with the big-dogs on the fwy, where I get 90% of my mlge from. Stops on a dime [around town, a sudden tap sends everyone forward until their seatbelts lock, annoying but also reassuring] and the handling is quite good. I swapped the tires to 2O5/6O/l5 Dunlop D60 A2's before I took delivery, [I knew the 195/65/I5 Contis were weak howlers from my other Golfs] and it stays planted; granted the soft susp. makes it feel like riding in a Tilt-A-Whirl, but it never loses cntct with the pvmnt nor do those most-excellent tires complain even at their limits. I plan to upgrd to HR Coilovers, a K&N air filter, euro-spec headlight switch & lights, a Neuspeed cat-back exh and Super Charger after it gets 40k on the clock [which at this rate, will be around Thanksgiving] :Þ

Great bet for a used car by Donna on 03/16/2013. Trim: 2000 Volkswagen Golf GLS 2.0, Owned more than 10 years.
Useful?
Pros: Thirteen years, used daily, including on salt covered winter roads, and absolutely no rust. Even when it gets dirty the next rain brings back the awesome shine with no fading even after all these years. Great engine and road noise sound proofing, interior has a real look of quality, very nice sound from the speakers. Had original muffler up until just one month ago when it began to make noise and needed replacement. Very spacious inside and the rear seats totally flat, no problem carrying a bicycle or 8 foot long lumber.
Cons: Power window motor too strong, if the window is frozen it ends up pulling the window off its track. If the motor was not as strong it just would stay frozen shut. Had a few separate electrical issues that were very frustrating.
Overall review: Still looks so bright and shiny that no one can believe the car is so old. If you're looking for a used car to drive for the next couple of years, that doesn't look and sound like a junk box, grab an old Golf.

Zippy hatchback by ShadowRacer on 05/14/2012. Trim: 2000 Volkswagen Golf GLS 1.8T, Owned less than 1 year.
Useful?
Pros: It has a lot of power behind it for a smaller car, very smooth ride even over rough tracks. When braking, it stops on a dime, and very easy to control.
Cons: none.
Overall review: A car worth buying, will definitely be buying another newer one when i can.
