Best Jeep model for everyday driving by An MSN Autos Consumer on 05/04/2011. Trim: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD, Owned 10 years.

Pros: Styling, size and dependability. The first Jeep Grand Cherokee model ('93 to '98) has clean body lines, plenty of room for 4 adults without being a massive vehicle to drive or park. The interior is comfortable with good ergonomic design. A great vehicle for everyday driving. With the 5.2 liter V-8 model, this vehicle will tow large trailers or pull down a house in 4-Low. The full-time all-wheel drive makes this vehicle dependable in rain or snow. Other than standard maintenance, the only problem has been the transfer case. I did modify my Jeep with a cold air intake and performance exhaust for better fuel economy. I also upgraded the brake rotors and pads for more reliable stopping power.
Cons: Gas mileage! 13 city; 19 highway; 8 when pulling a 2 ton boat & trailer. The OEM brake rotors and pads are less than fair when towing a trailer. The transfer case vicious coupler binds when hot which makes tight turns a little difficult. Other than the transfer case, my Jeep has been a very reliable vehicle for the past 10 years with over 143,000 miles.
Overall review: I purchased this vehicle mainly for everyday driving and pulling my boat. The 5.2 liter V-8 provides enough power to climb hills or when merging onto highways while towing a trailer. There is plenty of room for passengers and luggage. This Jeep has many features and options to make this vehicle a pleasure to drive. My Jeep has always been a dependable and reliable vehicle to get me where I need to go in safety and comfort.

Great SUV - even after 10 years! by Tom on 02/07/2008. Trim: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD, Owned 9 years.

Pros: Bought it off a 2 year lease in 1999. Now have owned it for almost 8 years. 74,000 miles on it and it still runs and looks like new. Sturdy, great handling, lots of room and class - even at 10 years old. Have had extremely few problems. Most have been due to age (bushings, etc). Even the original battery lasted almost 10 years and that is unheard of. Great all around SUV.
Cons: No cons to report
Overall review: I'll probably own this car for anoter 10 years. It's fun to drive and has never let me down.

ABSOLUTLY AMAZING! by Stetson on 01/14/2004. Trim: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD, Owned 7 years.

Pros: Comfortable leather, handles amazingly, rides nice, great off road, can't beat a moon roof, great sound system...all around solid vehicle. Looks awesome!
Cons: Front brake rotors defective, covered under recall. Didn't cost me a penny.
Overall review: 180 K on mine and still purrs like a kitten. Regualr oil changes is the only thing I've ever done along with a transmission and coolant flush...but that's got to be done anyway. One solid vehicle!! I live in Canada and it's -40 today and it started perfectly like the day I bought it. Original exhaust system, perfect condition. Again...one solid vehicle!!!! LOVE IT 4.0L engine will run forever!

I love my Jeep by Paul, western Canada on 08/13/2012. Trim: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD, Owned 2 years.
1
Pros: I like the 4wd, especially in Canadian winters. Solid vehicle after 15 years. I have 390 000 km on it, have made some repairs - cat converter, tie rods, and shocks. The engine is bomb-proof but thirsty. It can go nearly anywhere. Really. Off-road, up creeks, through ditches, up and down steep hills.
Cons: 15 mpg (roughly 15 l/100 km) no matter how I drive it.... Back seats uncomfortable for long drives, smallish for cargo (I add a topper and remove the spare, using Slime as a flat tire backup).
Overall review: I bought this second hand from a very careful owner. I paid $3000 for it and have put about $3000 into it. Overall, it is a strong vehicle, with great styling and superb road and off-road capability.

Sorry to see it go. by Elayne on 05/27/2012. Owned 10 years.
1
Pros: We bought our 1997 Orvis edition Grand Cherokee with 85K on it almost 10 years ago. Traded it in today and we are sorry to see it go. Loved this car. It had its quirks but the engine was strong and it handled great in the snow. Good reliability and solid performance, towed well, and purred down the highway.
Cons: Gremlins in the electrical system like high beam switch and driver's side window issues. Gas mileage was a minus.
Overall review: This was a family car, our kids drove it to high school, we used it to haul home our Christmas tree...no major complaints.
