Humble but very capable 4x4 by NorthEast Trekker on 10/25/2011. Trim: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: These Jeeps last for a long time if you keep up with their maintenance. You see alot of these models still out on the road. Love the fact that my old jeep out performed my brother-in-laws Porsche Cayenne in the snow last winter. In short, my jeep got over the snow mound like it was taking a stroll through the beach while his Porshe could'nt.
Cons: Trunk cargo space taken up by spare tire. Could use more leg room for rear passengers.
Overall review: Excellent in the deep snow in 4X4 mode and can drive trhough a foot of water easily. Have 136K miles on my Jeep and no major issues until 133K (had trans cooler line blow, replace starter solenoid and crank shaft position sensor all within 6 months of each other), but it made it to 133K with nothing other than regular maintenance (how many younger cars/trucks can say the same?). Solid truck.

Reliable Transportation by Davis from Toronto on 09/13/2008. Trim: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD, Owned 10 years.
Pros: This is a v8 318ci that has reasonable gas mileage of 20mpg. Styling is very attractive, interior finishing is warm with leather and faux wood. Sound system is good, good storage (glove compartment and centre consul), steering wheel stereo and cruise controls, automatic headlight setting, and informative information centre. Beautiful highway cruiser and extremely competent off-roader. Big V8 packs a real punch and passing is always a breeze. Seats are very comfortable which is especially noticable after a long drive. Both front seats adjust electrically. Vision is excellent and parking is simple. Only one extraordinary repair (left front axle shaft) and the rest normal maintenance.
Cons: Overdrive button is on the dash behind the steering wheel.
Overall review: An extremely comfortable and competent vehicle that imparts a sense of confidence. I have owned it since 1998 and have never had occasion to regret the purchase. I have been fortunate to find an excellent Chrysler dealership who have never disappointed. I've looked at it up on the hoist and was amazed to note the excellent condition of the underside despite the salt used on our roads. It did develop some rust on the rocker panels and the tail gate but this was surface only and was easly repaired.

Love this ZJ by Mushymarine from upstate NY on 07/05/2008. Trim: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD, Owned 10 years.
Pros: Size, select trac system, goes anywhere in foul weather, comfortable, very dependable.
Cons: vehicle information center got picky eventually
Overall review: I love this Jeep- I'm getting a 2004 to replace it- 12 years of winter salt is causing it to rust underneath, and with a unibody vehicle that's not good.

Tough and reliable. by Neil on 11/28/2005. Trim: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Powerful, smooth (for a while), reliable, safe, comfortable, excellent road vision, easy to drive and parallel park. With a little lift (~2") it looks very aggressive. The V8's 280 ft-lbs. of torque will throw you back in your seat, and passing at any speed is a breeze. With a good set of tires, the Quadra-Trac 4x4 is awesome in the rain, sleet, ice, snow, and offroad. I've driven through 3 feet of snow, 4 feet of water, and gone on a few offroad trips.
Cons: At 150K I started developing problems with the transmission, but I guess that's to be expected. I have a hard time shifting into drive, sometimes it takes a few tries. It also slips into 2nd and 3rd. The A/C died a long time ago, before I bought it. I'm going to have to replace the steering soon, as the tie-rods are popping from wear and tear. This is general maintenance on such a high mileage vehicle.
Overall review: My previous vehicle was a '97 Cherokee, and even though it had some motor problems it was an overall reliable vehicle, and when it was totaled I wanted another Jeep. In March I bought a '96 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 5.2 liter and Quadra-Trac 4x4. I bought it with 140K and it's now up to 155K. Besides general maintenance, there are a few problems I'm going to need to fix, such as the tranny and steering. But after that she'll be good as new. This is a great, reliable truck, and safe for the family.
