We LOVE this SUV! by Sparta, NJ on 02/05/2012. Trim: 2011 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD, Owned 1 year.
4
Pros: Everything! Acceleration uphill is amazing - I feel like I'm in a sports car. It's such a quiet, smooth, and enjoyable ride. Interior comfort is great, and handling is amazing. Rear view camera is a must - I would never buy a car again without it. Also - the radio/speakers sound amazing. I always feel so fancy when I drive this car. I have had it 6 months and still get excited to drive it.
Cons: The touch screen can be frusterating as it is not a sensitive as the ipod touch screens that we are used to. Also, the touch screen sometimes takes a few minutes to start up.
Overall review: In looking for a high fuel economy SUV with a third row and good pricing, this was our top choice above the gmc acadia, durango, pilot, and audi. We did extensive research for months and we always came back to 2011 explorer, thus purchasing it. We have had for 6 months and we are so happy with our choice. Thanks Ford for making this SUV!!

Best overall midsize SUV after comparing. by Chad from Eastern Oregon on 09/23/2011. Trim: 2011 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros: Love overall redesign, inside/out. The 3.5L is smooth w/good balance of power, acceleration, and mileage. Have 9K miles so far, 70% city driving, and overall average so far is 19.1 MPG (4 MPG better than our '02 V-6 Explorer). Getting 21-23 MPG HWY. Comfortable seats. V/G handling for a midsize SUV. Very quiet on the road, even with the 20" rims. Good amount of space in all seats, better room behind third row than previous Explorers. Supportive leather seats. Love the dash display options. Great safety features, including inflatable seat belts (though they can be a little difficult to use w/ child car seats). Manual shift mode. General maintenance is easy to perform on this vehicle.
Cons: Transmission down shifts could be programmed a little more aggressively - but this can be overcome using the manual mode (which works very well). SYNC system can be handy, but a little quirky at times. Had a factory defect with the A/C system on our early model, but the dealer took very good care of us, and have not had any additional issues. Note: Read one REALLY negative online review by a leading auto review firm (all others scored this very vehicle very well, including one that named it the #1 Midsize SUV). In my opinion it was a very biased review (maybe the reviewer has an issue with Ford?). Drive it for yourself to see if you agree, but I think Ford has succeeded with this one.
Overall review: Love overall redesign appearance, performance, and quality. We had been vehicle shopping for over a year to decide what to replace our '02 Explorer with (which was very dependable). We looked strongly at minivans (have 4 kids) and nearly all of the midsize SUV's for a balance of space, reliability, and mileage. After eliminating the vans, we had narrowed it down to the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot. Once finding out Ford was finally redesigning the Explorer, from bottom up, we decided to wait a little longer. After driving the new Explorer, we were sold. We really liked the Highlander, but this has way more features for the money, has more room, a better appearance, and is quieter.

Good Value, Good power, Good MPG by Ross- Minnesota on 05/16/2013. Trim: 2011 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros: Comfortable quiet ride with strong acceleration. Third row seat is comfortable for adult over reasonable distances. No MFT or Sync so no problems with electronics. I like the fact that it downshifts going downhill so reduces need for braking on most hills. I also like the manual shifting option. I like the built in blind spot mirrors...it took a little getting used to but is definitely needed since the post is quite large. The terrain selector is nice feature as it puts some control of power distribution to wheels back in driver's hands.
Cons: No comfortable arm rest position for driver. Seat is a little short for anyone 6 ft or taller, not a lot of foot room for driver. Have to move driver seat forward to fold up middle seat for third row access.
Overall review: Wife demanded 6 passenger seating, I needed to tow a boat and some light weight off-road capability. The Explorer was the compromise that filled both bills with good looks to boot.,

2011 Ford Explorer - Don't Buy One by PatB Minnesota on 12/11/2011. Trim: 2011 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros: Roomy Nice ride Great looks
Cons: Sync and touchscreen are slow multiple problems with the transmission
Overall review: I love the look, feel and ride of the vehicle, but a major problem with the transmission that caused it to disengage and reengage harshly has caused us to file a lemon law suit. It is unfortunate to have such a large problem in the first few months of ownership. We also heard about a similar issue on a showroom floor model.
