Pros: Comfortable, convenient, utilitarian but still a GTI with the great 2.0T revised TSI engine. Lots of low end torque, handles great and the interior with the Jacky or leather is top notch.
Cons: Need to upgrade to Stg1 software to get the power that should have come stock (+30hp, +45tq). Sunglass holder and center console is too small.
Overall review: Great car in 2 door or 4, DSG or manual. Go test drive one, just dont buy in Candy White, I dont want to see any twins in my neighborhood.

Pros: It's very quick, agile, versatile, fun to drive, seats four adults comfortably, and gets really good gas mileage for a sporty car (I experience 22-25 mpg city, 30-32 mpg highway). Unlike most compact cars, the interior is upscale - nothing looks or feels cheap. It's more like an Audi than a VW. It has a full compliment of bells and whistles (bluetooth, NAV, Satellite radio, HD Radio, DynAudio speakers, etc.). Everything fits together nicely and feels solid. The new white on black guages make seeing them much easier than on the previous model (MkV) which had blue and red numbers/lettering. The six speed manual transmission is a joy. The LCD radio controls look cool too.
Cons: As Consumer Reports points out, it has long clutch pedal travel. As a result you have to keep your seat a little closer than you might like in order to depress the clutch pedal far enough to start the car and shift gears. It makes me feel a bit too close to the brake and accelerator pedals. However, lowering my seat a bit alleviated the issue for the most part. This won't be a problem if you buy the DSG transmission. Also, the radio and NAV controls are slow to respond. When you press one of the soft buttons on the screen it can take 2 or 3 seconds to respond. Finally, unlike other VW models, you can't store phone numbers, use voice dialing, or type phone numbers into the touchscreen.
Overall review: Before I bought the GTI, I test drove the 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX, 2010 Mazda Mazdaspeed3, 2010 Honda Civic Si, and my co-worker's 2009 Mini Clubman JCW. The WRX and MS3 accelerate a little better (OK maybe quite a bit better), but they just look and feel cheap inside compared to the GTI. The Civic is weak on acceleration even though it sounds like a race car above 6K RPM. The GTI and Mini are the only ones with full leather seats and HID headlights available. The MS3 does have partial leather seats but they look cheap and cheezy with the red wavey lines on the cloth. The Mini was the closest competitor to the GTI for my taste. But the Mini was just too small, costs more similarly equipped, and doesn't come with 4 doors. If you just want performance, then you would probably perfer the WRX or MS3 (watch out for torque steer, it has a mind of its own). But if you want a car that's got the fun factor, has the upscale niceties, and works as a daily driver, then get the VW GTI.

Overall review: This is my fourth VW after a 92 Passat, 99 Jetta, and 03 Passat. All four have been distinctive, fun, economical and reliable. The GTI combines these traits with the best blend of performance, practicality, safety, and economy (27 to 34 MPG during first 4000 miles) in the US market. VW must be selling these autos at a loss to maintain US market share. The roughly equivalent car in the UK (using current pound/dollar exchange rates), is over $40,000 compared to the $28,000 US MSRP.

Useful?
Pros: very economical, more than sufficient power when needed (or wanted), comfortable for long drives, attracts positive attention from onlookers (pride factor)
Cons: seat bottom tilts to rear when seat is lowered making exit somewhat less than graceful (especially for more elderly drivers)
Overall review: excellent value for dollars spent, fun to drive
