Useful and easy by MININA from PR on 03/28/2004. Trim: 1997 Hyundai Elantra GLS, Owned 7 years.
Pros: Slim, sort of good looking and very easy to clean or wash
Cons: Always keep getting the CHECK Engine light on. Take it for service and ther's no apparent reason for it.....maybe it could be a fuse problem? Who knows!
Overall review: Good for short or long distance. I have tried in both ways and has very good gas mileage.

Definitely a great buy! by Sarah from Willoughby on 01/03/2005. Trim: 1997 Hyundai Elantra GLS, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Small and easy to manuever. Surprisely, a lot of interior and trunk space, more so than you would think from the outside. Rides smoothly. Wonderful fuel efficiency. Generally cost the same or less than similar cars from the same years. Looks sleek - not like a sports car, not like a luxury car, unique. Doesn't need many repairs at all, if any. Safety and efficiency is the goal in this car, and it is without a doubt met with excellency.
Cons: Doesn't accelerate quickly and the ride becomes rougher when travelling faster than 40 or 50. (Note: Need to keep up with tune ups regularly to prevent these things from happening) Repairs will take longer and usually cost more, since everything from tires to all the tools needed to fix anything under the hood need to be ordered special from most repair shops. Don't attempt to put in your own stereo, because it won't work - get a professional to do it for you and save the hassle. Finally, just to note, if you leave the key in the ignition and open your door, an extremely annoying beeping sound will occur continuously to alert you.
Overall review: Although it isn't exactly the "Mercedes Benz" of all cars, the Hyundai Elantra is quite a buy. With its great fuel efficiency and small size, it is a perfect first car, especially for new drivers. It is easy to manuever and very rarely has any problems with the engine, brakes, or anything else for that matter. May have difficulties finding necessary parts, however, if it does have problems, as most repair shops will need to order tools and parts. Also, I have found that it does not ride as smoothly at higher speeds, especially going very long distances, as compared to other cars, but it still gets you where you need to go. Hyundai Elantras are priced cheaper than most and absolutely worth every penny spent on them! I would definitely recommend this make and model of car!

The Ultimate College students car! Cheap and reliable by Adam from Sidney, NY on 11/24/2003. Trim: 1997 Hyundai Elantra Base, Owned 3 years.
Pros: Very peppy and fast inline 4 cyl. motor, definatly could be modded to be a street racer..... but stock has more HP than most people need. very easy and forgiving car to drive and lots of fun.
Cons: The seats are stiff, and lumbar support is nonexistant. and long legs beware.. your knees will be in the stearing wheel constantly. Automatic trannys in Hyundai's are very poorly built with lots of plastic parts and need maintanence every 45K miles or so. but if you go with a manual tranny you will have no problems :-)
Overall review: A very Cheap car that is worth much more than you will pay for it.. we got our '97 elantra for $3000 in 2000 with only 35K miles on it, and there are 120K miles on it now and we have never had a major problem with it.. always just oil changes every 3K and a tune up (plugs and wires) when she starts idleing a little rough.

A Perfect and My First Car by Kid from Dayton on 06/21/2008. Trim: 1997 Hyundai Elantra Base, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: It's a good little car and cheap. Decent on gas.
Cons: The Cup Holders are right in front of the sterio. Parts can be expensive. Does not accelerate up hills very well.
Overall review: I gets me where I need to go. It's not flashy or fancy, but it still looks ok. It's a great first car.

destined for junk by An MSN Autos Consumer on 03/15/2005. Trim: 1997 Hyundai Elantra Base, Owned 8 years.
Pros: It has 4 wheels, and it runs on occasion.
Cons: Even though it was purchased as new, we've had problems with the trans, engine manifold cracking, radiator overheating, never never never again will we ever purchase a hyundai.
Overall review: You do get what you pay for so buyer beware. Be persistant with warranty work WHEN (not if, but WHEN) you need it.
