I love this van. (Bo't in '00, NOT just last year!)
by Happy in Lincoln Nebraska on 09/06/2007.
Trim: 1997 Honda Odyssey EX, Owned 7 years.

Pros:
What I like: the size, the station wagon-type doors, the look, the allover dependability, plus the dependability in extreme climates and on snow, the fold down "way back" seats which almost anyone can do, the glove boxes, the placement of dials, etc., the placement of window locks and automatic openers, the big windshield wipers, the way it turns, the view with the mirrors, the adjustability of the seats even though this is a moderate priced vehicle, ESPECIALLY the rear AC and vent unit.
Cons:
There are two things I would change about the Odyssey. I would make the seats longer from front to back. I have had several other vans which I didn't like nearly as much, but which had seats that were more comfortable underneath my upper legs. I feel like these seats were designed for smaller-than-average people! Second, the defrost mechanism has never been as good as I would like. It works, but not the best. You get a car full of people all breathing hot air when the temperature outside is 10 below, and it gets difficult to keep the front and front/side windows clear! There isn't a danger, just a hassle.
Overall review:
I love this van. It is the most reliable and best van I have had. I searched long and hard for this particular model of Odyssey, which was only made for a few years (more's the pity). I'll say it again: I love this vehicle.

Great Minivan
by WMT from Grand Rapids on 06/02/2005.
Trim: 1997 Honda Odyssey LX, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros:
4 car like doors, roominess, gas mileage, comfort, reliability
Cons:
radio leaves a bit to be desired
Overall review:
I love this vehicle and would recommend it to anyone. Gas mileage is about 27 overall which is far better then 13mph that I had with my truck. It hauls a ton and rides like a car.

Overall review:
The ' 97 Honda Odyssey is, in my opinion, the best minivan that came out on the market that year. It's quick and witty. It's the car that you will never get tired of, even if you drive for 15 years. It has excellent steering and acceleration for a MV, and will drive until the engine falls out. This car is a buy that none will regret.

The Most Maligned Minivan of the Mid 90's... Undeservedly!

Pros:
1997 Odyssey LX, CA emissions, used Rose Parade promo car sent to Seattle to rot: Only way to go when you have no garage, particularly if you do city driving. Guaranteed observed 25 + mpg up to average cruise speed of 70 mph. No seat removal hassels! Used as a commuter, passenger van, and light truck. Purchased used in 1998 with just over 6k miles, at 183k miles now. Great build quality and astounding reliability. It just does not fail following the dealer service schedule, the basic service schedule is more than adequate if you want to save some bucks. Saw a used 97 LX for $13K (dealer price) earlier this week with 75K miles, at $11K I would buy it.
Cons:
Nitpicks! All mechanical complaints based on hard usage and many miles. Can be a handful in crosswinds. Tire roar and wind noise. Cassette deck noisy, heat trapped in dash, bad speaker placement. Overpriced new. No tach or VTEC (std in 1998). Cabin air not filtered. Piston slap at 100K miles (but no oil burning/good compression at 183K) . Armrests not padded. Hip area has cold drafts in very cold weather. Torque converter lock up at slow speeds annoying. Good mileage, but needs more power. Needs CV joint boots (one axle at a time) every 60K miles. Cup holders marginal. Noisy brakes/chassis/exhaust brackets with high miles. Whine, whine, whine...
Overall review:
This is the best car I have ever owned. My review is a 177,000 mile test drive. The 97 Odyssey is easily a 200K mile car. The only parts that have failed outright are light bulbs! It is really a tall wagon, not a minivan... And is the best one ever made. The folding rear seat sold the car, as I have to carry a lot of boxed goods for my job... And no place to put a removable seat! The 95 - 98 Odyssey has the best fuel economy of all vans in the past 14 years. For a pre-2004 minivan, look no further. For a 2004, the Sienna is a better vehicle (sorry Honda). This car has never let me down. I am considering a mid-level rebuild (pistons, rods, rings, light hone) in lieu of purchasing a newer car to get another 100K miles out of it. Road and wind noise are my primary complaint. If you don't have to carry plywood and sheetrock, and you carry up to 3 large and 3 small passengers (plus a large driver), YOU CAN"T GO WRONG BUYING A CLEAN USED 4 CYLINDER ODYSSEY!
