The Smart is a Great Little Car! by Marty on 11/25/2011. Trim: 2009 Smart fortwo passion, Owned 3 years.
Pros: I have had my 09 Passion for 3 years, no problems at all. Consistent 40-42 MPG around town and 47+ MPG on long highway trips. The short wheel base makes it bumpy on rough roads, on smooth to average roads the ride and handling are "right on". Great on snow and icy roads. If something happens to this one, I will buy a Smart as a replacement. It draws a lot or questions from the public. I have only seen one Smart commercial in 3 years, I believe if advertised and sold my local MB dealers, the sales would greatly improve. Long story short, it is a Great Little Car! I am 6'3" and 250 pounds and easily/confortably fit in the car.
Cons: Tilt steering column is not available.
Overall review: The Smart is the best car for the money I have ever had.

great small car for two by Bob on 07/16/2011. Trim: 2009 Smart fortwo pure, Owned 2 years.
Pros: Riding is more comfortable than expected for the short wheel base. Using manual stick on hills allows for improve performance. Has better milage than expected. 45-48 when held below 65 mph. Fun to drive on curvy roads. In snow twice with excellent handling.
Cons: Automatic transmission slow to shift on hills. Skips when going around curves fast. Nosiy suspension on rough roads.
Overall review: Excellent small car riding and over all performance. 36,xxx miles with no servicing needed except normal each 10,000 routine servicing.

The Love Bug, reengineered by Mercedes. by Raoul from Boston on 12/10/2010. Trim: 2009 Smart fortwo passion, Owned 2 years.
Pros: Roomy interior. Great city car. I've driven it long distances and in Manhattan traffic. Great for maneuvering in hostile urban environments. Can be parked anywhere. It's fun to drive and is a fantastic car for what it does. smart will be marketing a rebadged Nissan as the forfour. This should make the marque more viable over time. The high seating position gives you great visibility of the road. My 6'4" frame fits easily and I still have to move the seat slightly forward from its maximum extension. Much easier to get in and out of the car than a Subaru Legacy/Forester or even the M-B C class sedan.
Cons: The transmission is odd. It's a semi-automatic (electric clutch manual). But it has improved since Daimler remapped the earlier shift programming. With the "passion" it has paddle shifting if you want to have finer control. The warranty is too short. Service is expensive at the M-B dealers who also sell the smart. Premium fuel is advised. It will run on regular, but performance and gas mileage will suffer.
Overall review: It works as advertised. You need to be predisposed to loving it before you own it. It's surprisingly roomy and refined for its size. It is an impressively engineered little machine. But it is far from a performance car. Handles well within its driving parameters. Simply jets in and out of the gaps in heavy slow moving traffic and will park in those tiny triangles of space in Christmas shopper packed malls. Quirky. French-built. Swiss-inspired. German designed. I have three cars. 2001 Saab 93, 2005 Honda Element, and my 2009 fortwo. So I'm used to quirky vehicles. I drive the smarty the most. Its a more involved driving experience, reminiscent of the 1970's VW Superbeetle that I learned to drive with.

smart is the best thing since sliced bread &I chick'n nuggets. by Don S from UpperUtah on 08/31/2010. Trim: 2009 Smart fortwo passion, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Logical options are std,TractCont,StabCont(even auto-flash when ABS is on). Entry, exit ease, no reachin over hood & trunk to clean glass. Fwd visability is super(high fwd seating lets me to see in front of cars on my left/right w/o having hood extended into lane of crosstraffic. Cornering & manuverability is mind blowing. Can park in narrow stalls and still not have much concern about other cars hitting their doors (flexible plastic pnls all around are an added plus). Over 50 yrs of changing oil/filters, this car is by far the easiest to service because of the hi grnd clearance & access to filter & drain. No worry of hitting/scraping thru road dips/speed bumps cause of short overhang.
Cons: Have to be careful about what I'm doing when driving (picking my teeth/nose etc) cause other everyone takes at least one doubletake as you drive by. When driving, this car seems bigger on the inside and outside than it really is so....when you see the guy in the rear view mirror pull up right on your bumper, remember it is a distance illusion and the guy really isn't that close (keep in mind that there is no trunk back there).
Overall review: I have owned my smart for a year & half and never regretted the purchase even though the Mercedes dealership treated me like a second class citizen who they were doing a charity favor. Don't believe Consumers Reports evaluation on this car, they obviously only drove it around the block once, if that!
