The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. by Edsel on 04/20/2010. Trim: 2009 Volkswagen Routan SEL, Owned 1 year.
Pros: The 4.0L engine in the SEL is terrific! Very powerful engine, easy highway passing. Very quite interior, excellent stock stereo (REQ), front seats are very comfortable. VW did a very admirable job re-fashioning the Chrysler Town & Country that this van is based upon.
Cons: Real world gas mileage around town is 16 mpg.
Overall review: I shopped every minivan on the market and had my thought my first choice was the Honda Odyssey. The Routan was my last test drive and it was quieter and more comfortable than the Odyssey and.... $10,000 cheaper. I purchased the Routan June 2009 and to date have absolutely no regrets. The Routan may not have been my first choice but it turned out to have been my best choice.

Too Many Repairs by Reggie on 02/09/2011. Trim: 2009 Volkswagen Routan SE, Owned 2 years.
Pros: It's very funcational and has a lot of storage. A great car for long road trips.
Cons: I purchased this car brand new and have brought it to the shop every month for repairs (brakes, steering noise, automatic doors that closed on my 4 year old, and other minor issues). At least there's a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty to cover the frequent service repairs. There are a lot of recalls on this vehicle as well.
Overall review: Overall, I would not purchase a Routan with all the repairs needed. It delivers a comfortable ride, but not worth the headache of frequent trips to the dealership service department. In my opinion, Volkswagen made a poor product with many issues. Very disappointed since this was my 4th Volkswagen.

run away as fast as you can! by disappointed on 04/02/2010. Trim: 2009 Volkswagen Routan S, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Headlamps, when they did not hold water, cd player, interior styling, brakes.
Cons: Parts quality, manufacturing, and service was very bad. Does not come with a dipstick for the transmission, and VW will not let you purchase one! Poor fuel economy.
Overall review: Stay away from this vehicle, VWof America, and Chrysler. This was the worse vehicle that I had ever owned. Put 5,000 miles on it and it was nothing but problems. Trans leak, and the dealership, Bob King VW, evidently did not know how to properly service the transmission, as it developed a rattle afterwards, that they had to bring in a tech from Charlotte to diagnose. Report was that they did not add enough fluid to the trans, and did not let it warm up and run it through all the gears. This is standard procedure! 2 window motors, one regulator, stock ventshades did not stick, bumper cover started coming off, and a headlamp held water. Run away from the Routon as fast as you can! It will live in the service dept.
