Great little car! by greenspire on 12/27/2013. Trim: 2008 Saturn Astra XR 3-Door, Owned 4 years.
Pros: Great styling in the 3 door XR. Four doors tend to be an ugly duckling and look like a Versa. UGLY! Great quality, fantastic handling with the 18" optional wheel/tire package. Quick steering, rain sensing wipers, rear wiper, ABS, stability control, Traction control and bigger brakes than the Yurp model. Excellent leather interior. 3 flash momentary directional blinker standard, one side parking light for parking on the side of the road. (VERY European!) Good mileage.........I get combined mileage between 26 & 32 on a regular basis,.....unless I am having too much fun! I also have a trailer hitch on the car and can pull a small trailer. Works great!
Cons: Car is a bit underpowered but gets good mileage for all that. European cars are different and not made for rapid acceleration. Not with the price they pay for petrol. You learn to drive differently......the name of the game is momentum! Keep it going......... The usual complaints are not enough cup holders and no ipod jack. Big deal.....so just drive, not drink etc. Saturn dealers are gone so it now goes to the old Saturn dealer that now carries Mazda. GM dealers will also work on them if necessary. Maybe parts will be hard to find down the road?
Overall review: Very nice car! Great commuter or for fun on the twisties. ALL the options you can think of! Looks great, drives very well, good mileage. Great in the winter with the proper snow tires on all four corners. (Saab wheels fit.......so do some other GM wheels.)

Wonderful European car by GK Baltimore, MD on 03/03/2010. Trim: 2008 Saturn Astra XE 5-Door, Owned 2 years.
Pros: 20K Review. The car is made in Belgium and is the 2nd best selling car in Europe. True Euro goodness. Its so much fun to drive especially in the city. The car comes equipped with traction control and ABS and the handling is the best in the class and was excellent driving through Baltimore during snowmagedden. I love the styling of the car and think its beautiful. I like the military time clock, just because it drives people crazy, can people actually not tell time in military its not that hard people. The car has been relaible too. The only problem I've had in 20K miles was that one of the speakers went out..
Cons: My only real gripe is that there is no MP3 hookup and you lose your onboard computer if you buy a stereo which is unforgivable if you are marketing a car to young people. All the extra options in the car make it heavy for a compact (its considered a mid-size in Europe) so acceleration is poor (doesn't bother me though its not we have an Autobon in the US). Cup holder is hard to reach, however YOU CAN BUY A NICE CENTER CONSOLE ONLINE FOR ABOUT $189 so it shouldn't be a problem. Oil filters are rare nobody carries them and you have to buy them online from the dealership ($10/each) or online (RockAuto $6). Parts might be hard to come by b/c they didn't sell too many in the states
Overall review: Its a great little car and one of the reasons why GM collpased last year. This car was originally designed and hit Europe in 04. GM could have brought it over and well PROMOTED IT and it could have beaten the Fit, Versa and Scions to the market way back in 05. Still for the price it was a better overall value than those cars. Also compared to the Golf, the Astra is a much superior car it looks better and is more reliable. My sticker was 17,900 however I got it for $14,900 after rebates. One last note: At least finally GM and Ford are bringing their European cars to the American market. For years the Opel (GM) and Ford have been producing great cars over there and we finally we are starting to get some of them.

Saturn Astra - Fun and Frugal by An MSN Autos Consumer on 07/28/2009. Trim: 2008 Saturn Astra XE 5-Door, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: I've had this car for about 6 months now and I am really happy with it. It looks great. The fit and finish is fantastic; there is no rattling or squeaking. It gets great gas mileage; between 6.5 l/100km and 8.5 l/ 100km - that's 36.19 mpg and 27.67 respectively - depending on the amount of city and highway driving. Interior space is also excellent. I have plenty of space on the front seat and I have a fairly big frame at 6' and 220 pounds. We even went on a road trip with the entire family; that's four people, a dog and luggage. Standard safety features include 6 air bags, four disc brakes with ABS, brake assist, automatic headlights and tire pressure monitor.
Cons: So far I noticed that the visibility inside is obscured by the pillars in the frond and in the middle. I find it hard to get a good overview when trying to merge traffic at a busy intersection. I guess they had to make them bigger to improve protection in case of side impact collision. There are two independent alerts for the level in the gas tank. The dashboard computer comes on with a warning saying: "Range 50km" and a count down. Once it's down to zero the gas gauge light comes on and I have approx. 50 km to go still.
Overall review: The Saturn Astra is fun to drive, very economical and has plenty of space for its size. There are a few quirks with board computer and the available gauges.

It could have been a good vehicle with a little advertisiing . by Stu on 07/06/2009. Trim: 2008 Saturn Astra XR 3-Door, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Looks, performance and all the extras that come with this vehicle
Cons: No center armrest, The clock (military time) & a few rattles Most of all the dealership did not inform me that this model was being discontinued this year. I THINK THAT STINKS!!!!
Overall review: I would not advise anyone to purchase a discontinued model. GM dropped the Saturn and parts will be hard to buy.
