SUV Replacement
by Drew on 10/08/2008.
Trim: 2008 Volkswagen Passat Wagon Lux, Owned 1 year.

Pros:
Ride is smooth, but not too soft. I'm a 6' 6" guy and have no problem fitting into the front seat. Performance of the turbo 4 is more like a V6...velvet smooth…auto trans is equally smooth. Controls are all very logical and well placed. Cargo area is ample with very usable space. I like this vehicle much better than the SUV I had before it. I’m getting 30 MPG, which is very respectable.
Cons:
Not much. Great car.
Overall review:
I really like this car.

Meets our needs - and then some.
by Nickwilson from Urban Chicago on 08/12/2008.
Trim: 2008 Volkswagen Passat Wagon Komfort, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros:
Quality sound system. Quick all round city/highway. Great Engine; handling; braking. Almost as much interior room as the full-sized suv it replaced. I like that the streets are not littered with these things - makes it feel like more of an 'independent choice' as opposed to the generic camrys, accords, and bmws out there.
Cons:
Mechanically So far so good - we're only 2500 miles into it. Ipod Adapter: Don't like it, should have stayed with aux. jack. Consumption: Avg 23mpg (we do mostly city driving but got over 30mpg on two 500+ mile road trips though, so it does what they say it will). Turbo's fun, but a bit startling/abrupt at times (slow moving traffic), I hate new-car smell - This one's almost a tad fishy after it has been closed for a while. A tad more 'yuppie' than I prefer (this might be a plus for some)
Overall review:
After 14+ years, we put our full sized SUV out to pasture and started looking for a more responsible replacement. I thought a hatchback would provide the versatility to which we had become accustomed, and after evaluating several brands we decided on VW for its build quality, and youthful image.
After an extended test drive of a Rabbit, we quickly realized that it did NOT meet the needs of our young, and growing family.
The premium looiking VW Passat we saw on the lot didn't fit the description of what we had hoped to end up with, but on closer examination it turned out to be exactly what we needed - and then some.
Also Tested: Jetta SportWagen felt "chintzy" by comparison. - hopefully this review does not encourage a whole slew of Passat Wagon sales to make it just another generic ride.

Pros:
Great car. Nice handling, powerful engine, no lag from the turbo. Lots of space. mileage is very good too: 26mpg In heavy traffic (30 mph in average for the trip)
Cons:
N/A
Overall review:
When crusing at 60mph, it actually gave me 34+ mpg. For usual driving with 70% highway (45mph average speed for the trip), it gave me 31mpg. Better than I expected!
