Fabulous Choice by Country boy from the Ozarks on 10/10/2012. Trim: 1997 GMC Suburban 1500 4WD, Owned 10 years.
Pros: Have owned it since 2002. Drives great and is easy to get in and out of. Excellent twin air placements to cool off interior. Routinely get 14 and 15 mpg city/hwy driving and have broke 20 on the highway - just barely but it did it.
Cons: Regular maintaining of vehicle has turned up a few GMC shortcuts in production. But that's unfortunately to be expected with just about all affordable cars and trucks. Twin a/c fans (frt & back) when in use really pull on alternator.
Overall review: Bought it with 90,000 miles in 2002. Had to replace a tranny at 125,000 and injectors at 160,000. Need to replace upper & lower ball joints at 225,000. I have no complaints about this vehicle. As long as you realize the fuel economy will not be all that great, it is an excellent 4X4 choice.

Great Suburban c2500 by MDWWI on 03/09/2006. Trim: 1997 GMC Suburban 2500 2WD, Owned 2 years.
Pros: 7.4 liter very strong with good acceleration, could pull a house down if need be. Great handeling on the open road. Can take long trips in comfy seats with very little fatigue. Plenty of interior room for anything you can imagine. Truck suspension can take some off road bumps and jars with no problem, even with 2wd. Great all aroung big suv.
Cons: The brakes feel spongy, even after a complete brake overhaul. Really need 4 disks to make feel better. 2500 series comes with HUGE drums and rotors that cost a small fortune to replace. Alot has to do with driving habits obviously, but they could be better. Other than the brakes, its a great suv. Gets about 10 mpgs with the 7.4.
Overall review: Would buy another one. Big and strong.

Best I ever owned. by dcalfine from Boston on 12/30/2005. Trim: 1997 GMC Suburban 1500 4WD, Owned 6 years.
Pros: The vehicle is reliable, versatile, comfortable, powerful. Its highway driving range between fill-ups is over 600 miles -- more than almost anything else. It carries at least 8 passengers including the driver -- mine carries up to 9 -- with plenty of room for luggage.
Cons: There is nothing I dislike about the vehicle. I do recxognize that at some point I will want something that gets more mileage. But I will be happy for this vehicle to last as long as it can.
Overall review: I am very happy with this vehicle.
