Flat nose rear drive throwback by Musician Hauler on 07/05/2011. Trim: 1997 GMC Safari SLX, Owned 8 years.
Pros: Durable, affordable,& reliable transportation for lots of stuff and or people. Inexpensive parts. Easy to work on for Do-it-yourselfers. You won't hurt it going over curbs or on dirt/gravel/rough roads. Cheap to insure and license too.
Cons: Uh, not many for me. It's a bit sluggish with the AC on. CD player would be nice.
Overall review: Find a newer one with a tow package and a CD player. Avoid AWD, insurance is higher as is maintainence.I have had no trouble with mine. Bought it used w/ 59k miles in 2003 from a GM dealer. It's the 2wd version with a tow package(extra oil cooler and trans cooler). I immediately had the transmission fluid, the anti-freeze and had the differential lube changed. I would put this van up against any other. You can load it down with people and stuff and it actually handles better because of the truck frame and suspension. The dealer put brakes on it before I got it, and I just did put new ones on the front in 2010. If you drive it easy, tires & brakes will last just fine. 4.3 liter V-6 is one of GM's best motors, it's not fast but is very sturdy and has good torque and cruising power. 75 mph all day long with a full load. Fuel economy? I get 19 most of the time and as much as 23mpg on the highway.

Safari a real minivan by Oregon bruce on 09/19/2003. Trim: 1997 GMC Safari SLX AWD, Owned 4 years.
Pros: This vehicle has excellent traction with the all-wheel drive and A.B.S. I love it
Cons: The suspension should be stiffer or they should offer a tow package.
Overall review: Excellent vehicle

Perfect Family Van by A CarPoint Consumer on 10/19/2001. Trim: 1997 GMC Safari SLX, Owned 4 years.
Pros: sits higher up than a minivan. More room throughout the van. The third back seat sits 3 people very comfortable with plenty of leg room. And for 250.00 we put in a 13" t.v. between the drivers seat and the passagers seat up front.
Cons: It is not very good with gas mileage. about 17 miles per gallon interstate driving and 15 miles around town.
Overall review: A great van, that your husband would feel comfortable driving around town and to pick up the kids.

Great work truck by Karl from Rio Rancho on 05/12/2007. Trim: 1997 GMC Safari Cargo Van, Owned 7 years.
Pros: Roomy, 3/4 Ton. My kids call it,"The work hard truck". I hauled over 2000 lbs. w/o trouble at 5,200 ft. altitude. Gets over 20 mpg highway, 18 on short trips in town. Runs like new with 138k miles. Very low maintenance. I replaced the original battery last year! Smooth, fast starting engine. Grease fittings on all moving suspension parts.
Cons: It would be better suited for my needs with a rear seat. The only abnormal maintence has been fuel pumps. If you buy an aftermarket fuel pump, get a Carter. Carter is sold at Pep Boys. Does not ride like a car, probably because it is a truck.
Overall review: These are very popular trucks for a reason. I have had far less trouble with this vehicle than with our Pontiac Vibe, (Toyota Matrix in different body trim). The Vibe just turned 36k miles.
