Think twice before you buy a Mountaineer 2007 or 2008. by An MSN Autos Consumer on 05/24/2008. Trim: 2008 Mercury Mountaineer 4X2 Premier 4.6L, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Very comfortable SUV, lots of room in front and all back passenger seating. Great options, lots of power couldn't want anything more in a SUV.
Cons: We purchased a 2007 Mountaineer and within the first 500 miles we experienced problems with the transmission when slowing around 30mph as well as acceleration. Also have problems with front end. The car went into the shop at 1145 miles and we were jumping in/out of gears and the rpms would increase like the transmission was slipping. It has been in the shop 7-times (YES, 7) for the transmission, 5-for the front end and 3-for problems with the front seats. After we contacted the Better Business Bureau and 45-days of arguing with Ford, the Dealer and Ford took the 2007 Mountaineer back and allowed us to pick a new 2008 Mountaineer. Have driven the new 2008 for 500 miles.
Overall review: We purchased a 2007 Mountaineer and within the first 500 miles we experienced problems with the transmission when slowing around 30mph as well as acceleration. Also have problems with front end. The car went into the shop at 1145 miles and we were told by the dealer that the transmission learns from the driver as to how it shifts and handles and that we need to drive it for 5000 miles an all should be fine. Within 1500 mile the transmission began very hard downshifting, jumping in/out of gears and the rpms would increase like the transmission was slipping. Again, took it to the dealer and they re-programmed the transmission ans said all is fine. again, within 3500 miles the same problems, but worse. Took it back for the 3rd time around 9000 miles and was in the shop for 57-days. It is now a lemon and since been repurchased by Ford. Was replaced with 2008 however the 2008 is also experiencing the exact same transmission problems. I will be trading in my 2008 Mountaineer for a NON-FORD!

Rpms Increasing and no acceleration by Helen on 05/15/2014. Trim: 2008 Mercury Mountaineer AWD Premier 4.0L, Owned 6 years.
Pros: The car was fine for the first 73,000 miles. Having problems now.
Cons: I am having problems with the rpms increasing at 30 mph and not accelerating. The dealer ran two diagnostics on the car with no diagnosis. They fixed the throttle body but that was not the problem. Now lets see what they come up with. But appears to be a transmission problem.
Overall review: Good up to 73,000 miles

GREAT SUV!!! by Scott from New Jersey on 02/06/2008. Trim: 2008 Mercury Mountaineer AWD Base 4.0L, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Comfort, Acceleration, Great Looks, Great SUV!!!
Cons: MPG (what do you expect with a large SUV???) only about 12!, trunk rattles sometimes, i don't know what it is! becomes noisey at speeds above 70!
Overall review: Great SUV!! most comfortable SUV i have ever been in! Acceleration is great for the V6, has much more power than you would think, also it still has that punch at high speeds!

The perfect SUV by Kim on 01/07/2008. Trim: 2008 Mercury Mountaineer 4X2 Premier 4.6L, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: I love everything! The styling, the way it drives, everything!
Cons: The only thing I can think of is when I rarely need the 3rd row seating, the middle seats have to be let down to enter the rear. This is fine for me but if you need a 3rd row on a daily basis this would be a real pain.
Overall review: Excellent!

Overlooked luxury, capability, and quality in a domestic SUV. by Scott in Omaha, NE on 11/10/2007. Trim: 2008 Mercury Mountaineer AWD Premier 4.0L, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: The Mercury Mountaineer has a smooth firm ride with excellent acceleration. Handling through corners is flat and very predicatable. The turning raduis is suprisingly short and u-turns are a breeze. After about 3,000 mi. of city and hyway driving the 5-speed transmission shifted very smoothly. I love the 18 inch Michilin cross terrain tires and chrome rims. Get the chrome package, it looks great. This is a very quiet ride with very good fit and finish inside. The power heated leather seats are very supportive and comfortable on long trips. The 7 speaker audiophile sound system with Siruis satellite radio and 6 CD/MPS player has a crisp clean sound with a great subwoofer.
Cons: I would like to see the same blue instrument lighting and information center that is in the Mercury Mariner. The front seat console needs another bind for a wallet, cell phone, garage door opener or spare change rather than the bin on the dash.
Overall review: The Mercury Mountaineer offers a higher level of luxury, capability and quality than nearly any other mid-size SUV at a competitive price. This SUV has been overlooked by reviewers that seem preoccupied smaller car like or high end foreign SUV's. I recommend that anyone interested in a mid-size SUV test drive the Mercury Mountaineer. You will be pleasantly suprised at the quality and safety features. A smaller alternative that is equally impressive is the Mercury Mariner.
