Just SO SO! by BOB from Huntington,WV on 01/24/2004. Trim: 1996 GMC Sonoma SLS Reg. Cab Short Bed 2WD, Owned 8 years.
Pros: Good ride and gas mileage
Cons: Clutch master cylinder seems to be a week spot. Look to drop the trans. at 100k and replace. quite expensive to repair.
Overall review: Just OK

Overall review: I really enjoy my truck and find it very reliable. I might say that I want a new vehicle, but the truth is that I will drive my sonoma til the day that it falls apart.

Worth the Money by Erik in Colorado on 06/23/2003. Trim: 1996 GMC Sonoma SLS Reg. Cab Short Bed 2WD, Owned 5 years.
Pros: This truck looks great and has a lot of possibilities as far as customization goes. It gets pretty good mileage (I have the 2.2-4 banger). It is fairly quick around town and handles really well. I am 6'3" and fit comfortably in the drivers seat. It is strictly a 2 person truck, however. Three is a crowd. It has around 120K miles and have only had to have the clutch repaired and a u joint replaced.
Cons: If I had it to do over, I would of bought one with the 4.3 motor. This little four banger is sorely lacking in power on the freeway (85-90 MPH TOPS) and it is limited on what you can do to boost power because it is pretty much maxed out as it is. Gutless on hills, and drives like a dump truck witrh any kind of load. Interior is fairly nice looking and comfortable, but is cheaply made. Stuff falls off.
Overall review: I would buy another one of these in a heart beat, but would get one with the V6 for sure. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned.

GM for me by Showed me in MO on 03/11/2003. Trim: 1996 GMC Sonoma Club Coupe 2WD, Owned 7 years.
Pros: The gas mileage is excellent, mid 20s, under mixed road and speed conditions which I think is pretty good for a 4.3 V6 with automatic transmission. Brakes were replaced at about 50k and no other maintenance required except as noted below. The truck passes the MO emissions test with readings almost the same as a new vehicle.
Cons: I bought the truck new and batteries only last about 2 years. The starter was replaced at about 50k miles which I considered too soon, maybe that was related to short battery life.
Overall review: Good value--surprisingly good gas mileage and reliability as compared to my prior truck--a 87 Mazda with a 4 cylinder engine and stick shift.

alright... by me on 11/18/2002. Trim: 1996 GMC Sonoma SLS Reg. Cab Short Bed 2WD, Owned 5 years.
Pros: Body styling, seats and dash etc
Cons: General fit and finish, annoying part failures
Overall review: Eh, ok...I currently have 76,000 on mine, still needs 75000 service which may imrove it some. It was around 60,000 when everything failed. Only major issue was winshield wipers failed that was around $450 to replace (mooter, brackets, labor etc). Also clutch went out around then as well..another $450-500 repair. Some U-joints failed... Its mainly annoying things, plastic popping out of the dashboard, the plastic that covers the nuts in the door armrest peeling out. Seems the extended cab jumper seats no longer fit snug for some reason? I rearly use them. No power at all in this thing..I don't know how anyone thinks they are going to pull anything...completed unloaded, going up hill, getting passed by everyone. My wife has an impreza..blows me..as well as a Ford Focus...pretty sad. Overall, boost the power and spend more detail on the fit and finish, not a bad all around pick up
