Fun car!
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 12/29/2005.
Trim: 2006 Volkswagen GTI (Early 2006) 1.8T, Owned less than 1 year.
Useful?
Pros:
The acceleration and build quality are exceptional. The turbo makes it a lot of fun to take off, and the ride quality is also excellent. The car really stays glued to the road. The suspension is not really all that sporty, but it's very comfortable and I'm quite happy with it. Cornering wasn't all that great, but after installing a rear sway bar, it now corners quite well.
Cons:
One major downside is that, if I'm in 5th gear on the highway doing about 80, the engine is at about 3300rpm, which I think is a bit high. I think the car would get much better mileage if it were geared slightly differently. 4th and 5th gear are geared rather closely to each other. Another downside is that the car has excessive body roll in turns. I have to brace myself to take a small turn at 20mph. However, I just installed a rear sway bar, and the problem was completely eliminated. The car turns exceptionally well now.
Overall review:
A lot of fun to drive and definitely worth the money. Build quality and ride quality are unbelievable. Gearing could have been engineered a little better, and the car desperately needs a rear sway bar to eliminate excessive body roll.
