Good minivan alternative by From Regina, SK on 12/23/2012. Trim: 2006 Mazda Mazda5 Sport, Owned 6 years.
3
Pros: Perfect size of vehicle for us. We needed the space but didn't want a minivan, so we got this which meets our needs, is more fun to drive than a minivan, and gets much better millage. The third row of seats are good for kids and short trips. No big problems, a few annoying small problems.
Cons: Original tires wore out too soon. A set of aftermarket tires fixed this. Rear electric locks failed. Bushings on the suspension have failed more than once. The dealer in Regina, SK is terrible. A passenger side armrest should be standard. It seems Mazda cheaped out in a few places. Fairly low ride height can make winter driving a problem in deep snow. The rubber around the rear doors needed to be replaced after the kids kept stepping on it.
Overall review: It has suited out needs and has been fairly reliable. But there have been a few annoying problems. Approx 140 000 kilometers

Never buy MAZDA again by FAN on 02/12/2012. Trim: 2006 Mazda Mazda5 Touring, Owned 6 years.
1
Pros: The look. Interior space.
Cons: The quality. The big problem is the rust-proofing ability. Mazda car is not recommended in CANADA. The shock was changed. The light blownd out. Certianly all the problems happend after warranty. This is my first MAZDA, and it is my last one too.
Overall review: Quality is bad.

Big room for small car. by Ponderosa, New Mexico on 02/24/2010. Trim: 2006 Mazda Mazda5 Sport, Owned 4 years.
1
Pros: With standard transmission and air conditioner off, ours gets 30mpg highway. Easy access to relatively big interior. Sleek body style for a van results in good control in cross winds Lots of options some other brands charge for are included in base price. 6 passenger capability with small adults/large kids being relatively comfortable in last row. Good power with standard transmission - even at our altitude of 7,000ft. Good warranty.
Cons: Very little ground clearance, we must be careful when parking not to damage front bumper. Changing oil filter requires jacking up car and a complicated process. Battery water check is almost impossible without removal. Moderate road noise. Very sensitive to wheels being even slightly out of ballance Ours has a frame related "knocking" sound when going over bumps. Mazda changed engine mounts and replaced sway bar bushings with no reult. Lost air conditioner coolant and had to be recharged. Rear view mirror keeps coming loose. Trouble shifting standard transmission into reverse at times. In 2006 black was the only interior color, very hot for a vehicle with lots of windows!
Overall review: A good, nice looking, versitile vehicle for the price. Would be ideal for soccer mom or for light hauling of large objects. Vacation in this and have all the room needed for camping gear or bags/bikes/skis etc.. If it came with AWD option it would be better for my climate but I would buy another anyway. At 42K miles it has been reliable but unresolved problems keep me from giving an "excellent" rating.

SpaceWagon ZoomZoom Highly Recommended by Chicago TomTom on 01/10/2010. Trim: 2006 Mazda Mazda5 Touring, Owned 4 years.
1
Pros: Versatility and Gas Milage is tops. We went from a 2005 Grand Cherokee Hemi that guzzled 12 Mpg to the Mazda5 getting 23 Mpg overall in mostly city driving. With two rows folded, the space in the 5 is cavernous. Pickup with one or two passangers is very peppy. With one person alone, it is downright snappy. Outward visibility is excellent and the manual sliding doors operate very effortlessly. My 5 year old had no issues opening and closing it on her own. Nice having that 3rd row of seats for the occasional extra junior passenger. There is also handy storage under both 2nd row seats which is really handy.
Cons: Not many downsides but some oddities include really thin door panels so the ding very easily. There is no armrest for the front passanger. My 06 came with standard Low profile 17" wheels which don't survive Chicago potholes very well. I've had to replace one wheel that was bent beyond use. Also, the stock Toyo's give great gas milage but aren't very good in snow or wet pavement. They also wear down quickly. Replaced all 4s with Dunlop SP Sport Signatures which are give a more compliant ride sacrificing some of the orignal zoomZoom handling fun but gaining a huge advantage in overall grip even on snowy roads. You will also loose a few miles per tankful since the Dunlops are heavier.
Overall review: After driving this for 3+ years, the 5 still embodies what Mazda's zoom-zoom spirit is all about. It's a very entertaining drive without draining your wallet of gas money nor from the initial purchase. 06 was the 1st year offered and early production samples seem to have a creaky suspension noise during sub freezing temps. It's more of an annoyance that an issue, and it goes away when the temps are above freezing. This 5 perfectly suits our 3 person family's active life and we do not miss the lumbering 4x4 which we came from. We attached a 1 1/4" Curtiss hitch to the back to add a bike rack and tinted the back and 2nd row windows. Ours came with the factory nav. It's very easy to use and the automatic flip up screen is novel. We plan on someday replacing this with the next newly designed 5 when that occurs.
