Diesel sipper by Ted from Milwaukee on 07/04/2005. Trim: 2005 Volkswagen Golf GLS 1.9 TDI, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros: Excellent car with great features. Built solid. Great for a college student like me. MPG is excellent and worth the extra money. Love the sound system. Lives up to what I expected from VW.
Cons: Seating can be a little tight for four people. Trunk space is a little less than I expected. I can't quite fit my golf clubs in so I have to fold the seat down. The only problem with the diesel engine is perhaps finding a pump. However, this is getting easier these days. Also, diesel does not produce the most enjoyable fragrance.
Overall review: Excellent car for the money. When I drive it, I feel extremely safe. Diesel engine was worth the extra money when I go to the pump. Engine performance is still excellent. My next car will be a little larger so I can fit 4-5 people more comfortably. I will enjoy driving and owning this car well past 100,000 miles.

Speedy Bus by Acidpl on 02/04/2008. Trim: 2005 Volkswagen Golf GLS 1.9 TDI, Owned 3 years.
Useful?
Pros: The mileage on this car is incredible - I can run the car over 600 miles on one tank of gas in the summer time, and around 500-550 in the winter depending on how cold it is. I live in the mountains of Montana, and only once has the car not started up in the morning (because it was 30 degrees below zero and I had only 1/8 of a tank of fuel left). But after 20 minutes I was able to get it started without plugging it in. The car is heavy, low to the ground and has a wide wheel base, so it feels very safe to drive. With the Electonic Skid Protection, I have never been able to spin out on ice or lose control of the car on slippery surfaces. Excellent sound system. No problems with sunroof.
Cons: As one owner mentioned, it is a rather expensive car to have maintained, and with the TDI engine it is very important that each service be done on time and to use synthetic oil as opposed to regular. I belive this pays off though, as I have 74,000 miles on this car and have had no major problems. The only issue I had was with the hatchback not opening about a year after I bought it. It was under warranty, so the would be $600 closing latch repair was only $100.
Overall review: After owning several different vehicles, I must say I will never buy anything else other than VW. I believe this company has hit the bullseye as far as providing outstanding safety, comfort and practical engineering without going overboard with being too fancy and adding things we just don't need.

The best car I have ever owned or will own in my lifetime! by Bria., Bono, AR on 06/09/2006. Trim: 2005 Volkswagen Golf GLS 1.9 TDI, Owned 1 year.
Useful?
Pros: I fell in love with VW years ago when I owned an '80 Rabbit, Diesel. At the time the engine performance was lacking, as the engine lacked the turbo. The 2005 model I own is a far cry from the late 70's early 80's diesels. Don't be fooled by this tiny car with a tiny engine. It's quiet, runs smooth, hardly any smoke to speak of, and even though you only have 100hp, it's the 177 ft.lbs. torque you'll absolutely love driving! (The new gasoline powered VW GTI has 200HP and 207 ft.lbs of torque just to compare and that's the top of the line VW sport.) In my humble opinion....best car I'll ever own. Oh, by the way, I average 50 MPG city and highway driving!!
Cons: Here it is, nice and simple. Don't plan on purchasing a late-model diesel and driving it past the recommended service intervals like you would your gasser. Don't plan on skimping on the oil and going with any oil like you would your gasser. These cars are VERY specific on the oil they use, however the oil and VW recommend 10,000 mile intervals saves engine wear/damage and money, even though the oil is a little pricier. If you're thinking of purchasing a used TDI, do the research, make sure the owner(s) have used correct spec oil within the proper interval. German engineering makes for a better car, however, if you can't afford to do the service on your car, don't purchase a TDI.
Overall review: Best car I've ever owned and will own. 'V-dub in da house!' If you have the time and are concientious enough to take good care of your vehicle(s), like performace with fuel economy, it's simple...you need to purchase a TDI.

Best economical and versitile small car by An MSN Autos Consumer on 05/30/2006. Trim: 2005 Volkswagen Golf GLS 1.9 TDI, Owned 1 year.
Useful?
Pros: The little details that show that VW has kept their driver focus. Everything is within easy reach and angled towards the driver. It becomes second nature to drive this car.
Cons: Would like to see better gearing like what is available in Europe. A V6 2.5L TDI in Europe can see over 60mpg due to taller gearing for cruising.
Overall review: Other than a couple of small nicities that the new models have, I'm extremely happy with the Golf GLS TDI. My average mileage has been 46mpg. That's better than what it was rated at on the highway!
