not safe. by disappointed on 01/23/2012. Trim: 2005 Ford Escape XLT 2WD, Owned 4 years.
Pros: good size, with adequate carrying capacity
Cons: bought this car used, transmission went out, 1.5 yrs ago, now the computer has gone out and mechanic tells me expensive fix, must replace plugs, coils engine computer and wiring harness to have any kind of warranty. After doing some research, looks like this is a problem caused by faulty plugs installed at the factory, which cause coils to go bad and in turn ruin the computer. This car stopped suddenly while my wife was pulling into traffic from a shopping mall parking lot, causing a dangerous situation. From other complaints i have read online, this seems to be a common problem that is known by ford. I bought this car because I wanted to buy American, very unlikely I will buy another ford.
Overall review: cannot recommend this year model car.

2005 Ford Escape's sudden engine failure. Not a safety issue says Ford! by Guy who's been there on 08/12/2011. Trim: 2005 Ford Escape XLT 4WD, Owned 2 years.
Pros: Nice size, comfortable, high plastic side panels resistant to scrapes and rust. Has lots of power.
Cons: Ford installed the wrong plugs installed at factory. Causes the COP's (coils on plugs) to send EMI/RFI back to the computer (ECM/PCM) and burn it out. Ford admitted it was their fault back in a TSB (technical service bulletin) released on 05-11-1. Many owners have reported sudden engine failure while driving. Ford won't recall, or even admit that sudden engine failure is a safety problem. The PCM's are also very difficult to find. The wait time from Ford is up to 2 months. Warranty will cover if under 8 years/130,000km The most reported issue is the back windows spontaneously explode. Search more for "2005 Ford escape problems" It could save your life!
Overall review: Make sure you always research a vehicle before you buy it. This one is a dangerous lemon in my eyes. Too bad, because I did like it.

Buy Something Else by Dan (Omaha, NE) on 05/02/2012. Trim: 2005 Ford Escape Limited 4WD, Owned 2 years.
Pros: This is very nice looking car. We have the Limited Package and it looks great inside and out. The sound system is nice as well...however the cd changer has failed.
Cons: Reliability is what I have come to expect from Ford. HORRIBLE. I purchased used and have had to repair and replace a ridiculous number of different things. If I could go back i would not purchase.
Overall review: I cannot recommend this car to anyone. It has been a poor experience.
