A classy surf buggy! by Ing surf in PB (San Diego) California on 01/28/2005. Trim: 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle GLS 2.0L Convertible, Owned 1 year.

Pros: Pop the truck up and from behind my 2004 red convertible looks just like a porsche! I think she handles very well peddle to the metal around corners or curves she hugs the road! This is my third VW convertible but my first new car; 1972, 1980 and now 2004. Still I can get my 9'6" long board in the back seat!
Cons: The tranmission acts a little jerky before she warms up. Trunk opening is very small, but the trunk holds a ton of groceries. I never dreamed it would hold half of what I can get in there.
Overall review: I am a happy surfer. I LOVE my buggy so much. I don't think I would be any happier with a porche!

GET IT!!!!! by An MSN Autos Consumer on 11/07/2004. Trim: 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle GL 2.0L Convertible, Owned less than 1 year.
1
Pros: Flawless paint and bodywork. Plethora of standard equipment including a built-in MP3 player. Excellent stereo. Cool auto up-auto down power windows. Super cool interior lighting. The manual top is easy to put down and it's much faster than the power top. The ride quality is superb and surprisingly quiet on the highway. The 6 speed tiptronic automatic is delighfully smoooooooooooth.
Cons: Cup holders are only good for 12 ounce cans. Forget the Big Gulp!!! There are no coolant temperature gauge either. Don't expect a lot of extra passing power on the highway--there are none. Get the 1.8 turbo if you got the $$$$. The convertible top rattles slightly over bumbs. Trunk space? what trunk space?....hahahaha. The dash is a mile long too, so you have to estimate how long the nose protudes.
Overall review: If you're looking for a $20K convertible, look no further. Oodles of delightful surprises. No regrets so far.

Economy Bug by Wet in Seattle on 11/03/2004. Trim: 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle GLS 1.9L TDI, Owned less than 1 year.
1
Pros: Build quality, economy, almost handles like a sport's car, my wife smiles a lot while driving it, very roomy for two.
Cons: Long breakin period for the TDI...only getting low and mid 40's so far. Lousy room for 2+.
Overall review: If you like the syling, it's a great little car.

The ultimate scam by An MSN Autos Consumer on 07/30/2004. Trim: 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle GL 2.0L, Owned less than 1 year.
1
Pros: It handles and rides well. Excellent on wet roads. Side air bags standard. But who knows if, with VW's electronic problems, they will actually deploy in an accident.
Cons: All Volkswagens are a consumer scam. The interior finish actually wears off! So don't clean it. The electronic problems are constant, yet intermittent so the dealer can't fix them. VW will do anything to avoid warranty repair and you are stuck with the problem
Overall review: As bad as this car was it could have been worse. I could have purchased the turbo and been stranded in traffic four times due to the coil problem that VW claimed they didn't have the replacement parts for. If the could build new cars, they obviously had the parts. The problem is that once they have your money they don't care about your car problems. Call any VW dealer and ask for a service appointment. Since every car has problems the service appointments are booked up for weeks. I had a dealer tell me

Pros: Its appox 60 year history and it still shadows its infancy.
Cons: Nothing to dislike, this vehicle has proved itself like no other through endurance.
Overall review: A classic of appox 60 years now in a class of its own.
