Great Truck by Sean on 06/11/2010. Trim: 1997 Ford Explorer Sport 4WD, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: I like the fact that it is a 4 speed with overdrive. most people get it wrong and say its a five speed when it isnt. it handles pretty good but its a ford. gets around 22 mpg on the hwy. about 19 in town. has the 4.0 liter six cylinder. love the overall style of the truck.
Cons: only one problem i have had with it was my clutch going out but it turned out it was the mechanics fault for putting a spacer in the wrong spot.
Overall review: great truck. would recommend to anyone. mine has 127,000 miles on it and it runs like a champ. if your looking for a truck with plenty of room and style this is it. i recommend the manual transmission option.

pretty good SUV by commodore from albuquerque. on 05/17/2004. Trim: 1997 Ford Explorer XLT 4-Door 4WD, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: rides very smooth. good stereo & sound system, control trac feature.
Cons: ABS does not work as well as ABS on other vehicles. Brakes lock up sometimes. Acceleration is slow.
Overall review: i bought my explorer used and i am very pleased with it over all. i usually don't care for ford vehicles but the explorer is very reliable and stylish. it is confortable on long drives and i would recommend it to anyone looking for a good SUV. i drove a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee before i got the explorer and liked it better than the explorer but the ford is a close second.

A Good Choice When All is Considered by Joe, Illinois on 01/29/2005. Trim: 1997 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4-Door 2WD, Owned 5 years.
Pros: This vehicle is relatively inexpensive to purchase used. The V-8 engine/transmission is very dependable. I have towed, moved small pieces of furniture, and moved across the country in it -- it is a very useful vehicle. Insurance is cheap for it.
Cons: The entire heater blend door assembly is a problem. Ford designed a replacement that seems to work well, but that means the entire dash needs to be torn apart and put back together ($500 for labor, $120 for parts). Many small things -- mostly elecrtrical -- need to be replaced at the rate of 1 or 2 per year. Things like the turn-signal switch and gizmos to lock the doors or move the mirrors. Nothing very expensive ($100 to $200), but it adds up. The braking, even with 4-wheel disc brakes and anti-lock braking, are a bit underpowered for such a heavy vehicle. Gas mileage is horrible -- but you know that.
Overall review: I had no choice when I bought my Explorer -- I needed a vehicle quickly and this was the only one the dealer would cut me a deal on. I was skeptical about the Explorer, but bought her anyway. She has been a reliable vehicle in all conditions for almost 5 years. She requires unscheduled maintenance for small electrical items about twice a year and gets lousy gas mileage, but that is offset by the low purchase price and cheap insurance. Just plan on replacing the heater blend door assembly if it still original. Overal, I would buy her again knowing what I know now.
