A Finely Crafted Engineering Gem by E60 Driver in Atlanta on 09/15/2009. Trim: 2004 BMW 5-Series 525i, Owned 1 year.

Pros: Better cupholders than previous generation (E39), modern styling, so many awesome features that wannabe luxury cars can't top -- adaptive Xenon headlights, automatic windshield wipers, programmable dual-zone automatic climate control, and everything from power headrests to power tilt / telescoping steering wheel with automatic entry/exit. Beautiful styling....people are always complimenting me on how nice the car is. Good gas mileage. Great safety features (ABS, stability control, traction control, dual-stage airbags, head protection system). Impressive factory security system with interior motion sensor and vehicle tilt detector. Burly growl upon acceleration from all engine offerings.
Cons: TERRIBLE DESIGN for keyless entry to get into trunk. I set of my alarm every time I try to use my remote to open the trunk. Rather than one press to open the trunk, you have to hold it down...but holding it down for like one second longer sets off the alarm. Ummm. I'd like to thank the brainiac who came up with that idea. Teeny weeny storage console -- although I might look like Barbie, my accessories are bigger. Lots of brake dust, in true bimmer tradition. Costly repairs out of warranty. Should have more standard features. Trunk opens violently fast, and is quite hard to close. Non-height-adjustable seatbelts. The volume on the stereo needs to fade in slower than it does upon startup.
Overall review: Overall, this is a fantastic vehicle that cannot be matched by any competitor. It handles beautifully and acceleration is impressive across the board with impeccable braking. I am going to have a VERY hard time trading this car in for anything other than a 5-series, because after owning one, you really do feel that nothing else can compete. I might go for the M5 next time to complete the utterly selfish image, but even in 525i trim, the 5-series is absolutely a joy to own.

A Beauty of a Snail. by levy, atlanta on 01/08/2006. Trim: 2004 BMW 5-Series 525i, Owned 2 years.

Pros: Nice looking automobile, drives well, beautiful interior. Go with a higher 5 series if you can spare the extra costs or go with the 330 for better performance.
Cons: Acceleration is so poor in the 525i that it boarders on being dangerous. Getting enough acceleration to pull out into traffic or to cross lanes of traffic always gets my heart racing as to whether I will have the power I need to navigate safely and timely. Previous to the 525 I had the 330i. I am going back to the 330i when this lease expires. I miis the power and the handling of the 330.
Overall review: great car if pickup and speed are not important to you. Not well suited for city traffic conditions.

Pros: love to drive this vehicle whether it is around town or for long trips. handling, acceleration and steering are strong points that give pure satisfaction.
Cons: the car could be a little more roomy
Overall review: didnt know the reason its called ultimate driving machine till i owned it. bought it for the looks and prestige but fell in love with its drivability. makes passing easy and fun with lot of confidence. its the kind of car you want to be doing 80mph quite often. would recommend it to anyone. i-drive is not the complicated gadget most people seem to make it out to be.

Major/Costly Design Flaw by Yellow Rose of Texas on 08/23/2005. Trim: 2004 BMW 5-Series 530i, Owned 2 years.

Pros: 530i has more power and is bigger.
Cons: Design flaw under front license plate with the 10 "airflow holes" across front of car. Right inside those holes is the air conditioner condensor....runs full front of car. There is nothing to keep road debris out...no protection for condensor. One small rock and the condensor is damaged. $1200 to repair it and BMW NA refuses to acknowledge it has a design flaw. Look at 2005 models...BMW has corrected design with a screen. Every 2004 driver should be livid...and write BMW NA. What happened to my 2004 can easily happen to yours.
Overall review: Want to love this car but BMW NA makes me detest owning it...

Drives like a BMW, but has Jag electronics w/o beauty of Jag interior by Car Guy from Baltimore on 04/03/2005. Trim: 2004 BMW 5-Series 545i 6-speed, Owned 1 year.

Pros: Bought this after 6 years in a great '98 540iA. The 2004 is also a fantastic driving car. Excellent power and silky smooth 6-speed. Superior brakes and the active steering is wonderful. I-drive annoying, but easy to learn. NAV system has been very helpful. Like the adaptive headlights, too. Styling is, at least, cutting edge-great from some angles and not so from others. Black paint helps. Two tone interior colors beautiful, but materials not up to best in class. Wood very dark. Interior whisper quiet. Can drive all day at 100mph. Got rid of annoying loud locking beep of '98, though set off alarm opening trunk all of the time. More leg room in rear than 98, Cup holders better but still poor.
Cons: 8800m in shop 3 wk tot.Absolutely no drive train problems. Pass. air bag repeated "fault" & not triggr'd by 110lb wife. Logic 7 static prob. w/ voices in AM all spkrs. Dealer can't fix even replacing radio, amp, even rear wind. with antenna. I-drive programming idiotic. If you want to adjust tone(makes static less annoying) you can't go right back to radio. Car should start up with last screen showing-even if you have to hit annoying disclaimer first. Angry that $65000 car with top stereo won't play MP3's despite hint to that in manual. No upgrade, no blue tooth, no sirius w/ nav. '05 has nice wood panel bottom center dash, but not available for 04. Seat htr & air bag lights too bright
Overall review: The car is a dream to drive. Mechanically the ultimate. Plenty of power and superior transmission, handling, and braking. Looks are growing on me & as times goes by, are more contemporary. While I quickly mastered the I-drive, I prefer the "clutter" of buttons it was supposed to cure. It's simply a distraction. I know I could have programmed it better and wonder why BMW didn't. I think they concentrated so much on the superb mechanics of the car that the interior, controls & creature comforts were an after thought or must not concern their engineers. What engineer could drive this car at night and not be annoyed by the seat heater lights? Or could try to modify the tone of the radio and not realize that you shouldn't have to punch through 6 screens to get back one step to the station presets? Why no MP3 player when a Subaru has one? I'm worried about the electronics after all this time inshop. Still a Beamer guy, but a bit annoyed. Will they put the new 750's engine in the 5 next year?
