Excellent TRUCK, Redux by Steve on 08/11/2007. Trim: 1996 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer, Owned more than 10 years.
1
Pros: Body-on-frame construction. Clean styling. Excellent tow capacity. High ground clearance. Roomy, comfortable interior. Fine ride for an SUV. Tight turn radius. Practically unstoppable in any kind of weather of off-road. Wide stance -- less prone to rollover than many other SUVs. Was COMPLETELY trouble free for the first 75,000 miles -- ZERO repairs needed. Big, yet compact -- still fits in garage, unlike the Expedition. Lots of power and torque. Cruises comfortably and quietly on the highway. Compares favorably to most late model full sized SUVs.
Cons: The fuel mileage is relatively poor, averaging ~15 MPG for me, overall. Prone to rust unless well cared for. Some might not like the drop gate, but it works for me. Some might not like the limited interior cargo space, but it's fine for me. Some might not like the limited (5) seating and and rear seat accessibility, but they're fine for me. There have been fairly many maintenance issues since the odometer turned 75,000 miles -- Radiator, idler pulley, auto-locking hubs, ball joints, rear brake hubs, ABS pump, starter, fuel pump, and 2 fuel tank send units, plus the usual culprits among suspension parts. Since 100,000 miles, though, maintenance demands have by and large gone away.
Overall review: I bought my Bronco new in 1996. Though 12 years old, it's surprisingly far from obsolete. At 138,000 miles, it's still exceptionally clean, but has required exceptional effort on my part to keep it that way. If you want it to last, keep it CLEAN. Wash and wax frequently, paying particular attention to the door jams and the areas around the tailgate, and be sure to treat%2Fprotect the fiberglass top. Also, be prepared for possible maintenance issues%2Fexpenses between 75,000 and 100,000 miles. The drive train, though, will go on forever if cared for. Bottom line, it's probably a less-than-ideal commuter or family car. If, however, you're looking for an off-road, snow, or especially tow vehicle, the Bronco could be a good choice, and the Eddie Bauer package gives very good interior comfort. Just be sure to get a good one to begin with. Check the service history, and inspect very closely for signs of corrosion.

4x4 Excellence by ATLOffroad on 06/12/2007. Trim: 1996 Ford Bronco XLT, Owned 8 years.

Pros: This SUV is at home in the mud. Great offroad and takes alot of abuse with no damage. My dogs love that the rear window rolls down. Lots of room inside in both front and back seats. I pulls trailers with ease. 30 gallon fuel tank allows me to go 400miles on a tank of gas.
Cons: To engage the four wheel drive you just push a button and hope it works. Many times it hasn't so I installed a 4x4 shifter which works 100% of the time. Gas mileage is bad (I guess that's why the fuel tank is so big).
Overall review: They don't make them like they used to. The Bronco is a tank and will go anywhere. All suspension parts are made tough and do not break.
