Big, Black and Easy to Get Into by Hawk on 07/08/2006. Trim: 1998 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro, Owned 8 years.
Pros: Dude, it's totally awesome! But seriously, I get looks all the time in this vehicle. AWD allowed me to replace my Tahoe w/o losing too much safety for my family. The motor has a distinctive sound to it. When you turn the key, that sound is so sweet of a rev that people actually look over in a parking lot to see what it is. Corners like a sports car, and double glass makes it almost noise-free. Plenty of power to pass on highway or two-lane road. Tiptronic is a nice feature for "showing off." As others have mentioned, I cannot believe how nice the factory Bose stereo sounds w/ 6 CD magazine in the trunk.
Cons: As someone else mentioned, mine seems to not know what gear to get into at around 40-45 mph in "Drive" gear, I cure it by simply driving around in gear 4 around the city.
Overall review: It rocks, BIG TIME.

Xpensive to Maintain, but a Fantastic Car by Svxit1 on 11/21/2006. Trim: 1998 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro, Owned 3 years.
Pros: It is big, fast, safe, comfortable, gets 29 mpg on the highway and has a range of approx. 600 miles on a tank of gas (highway). It also does not draw unwanted attention. Performs beautifully in the rain and snow.
Cons: The maintenance bills can be eye-watering. An independent repair shop is a must-have with this this car, as the dealers will want both arms, both legs and the first-born. The transmission doesn't hold gears, especially on hills.
Overall review: It has been expensive to maintain, but it has been a fantastic car. It has held up very well.

My trouble A8 by An MSN Autos Consumer on 07/31/2006. Trim: 1998 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro, Owned 8 years.
Pros: An eye catching car
Cons: Not reliable and so expensive to repair.
Overall review: Good luck when you are out of warranty. The dealer may charge you flat rate even for few hours job. Charged me $1725 labor to replace two heat cores for aircon. So far I have spent more than $2,000 a year to repair. It is only 90K miles.

Expensive to maintain, but worth it. by Montague on 03/15/2005. Trim: 1998 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Some reviewer called it the stealthy wealthmobile. That's about right. Understated elegance and fun to drive. 300HP, 4WD and 22 MPG. No safer feeling in the world when driving on rain, ice or snow. As if it's on rails. Will spoil you for any other car.
Cons: Not a good car for someone used to Lexus-like reliability. Maintenance is an ongoing expense. Goes through engine and drive- train gaskets and seals like crazy. Budget for it when you buy the car. Or get extended warranty that will cover leaking gaskets. Depreciation is incredibly high but used prices reflect this. Don't pay too much and you'll be fine.
Overall review: Consider a 2000 or newer as appear to be more reliable and thus more cost effective. Print out the audipages A8 checklist. Carefully read audiworld forums for known problems before purchase. Then take to expert German car mechanic for inspection. Insist on maintenance records. Then buy it if the price is right. They are incredible automobiles!

One of the Very Finest by O in MD on 06/16/2004. Trim: 1998 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro, Owned 1 year.
Pros: A very graceful-looking car, yet understated, and you don't see them coming and going. For a car of such high performance, it has an amazingly long range on a tank of gas (a blessing with gas prices where they are) and is a real gem on road trips. The prices of these cars have fallen through the floorboards; even with moderately high miles, they are far better than most of the new cars that are out now. Performance in bad weather conditions is nothing short of amazing. Also, because it is such a safe car (and doesn't get stolen), insurance costs are surprisingly low.
Cons: Maintenance bills can be eye watering, definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you have some mechanical aptitude, it's a fairly easy car to work on.
Overall review: With all its faults and foibles, it is the best car I have ever owned. If I ever sell it, it will be very difficult to part company with ... and a near-impossible act to follow.
