Great Car by Sylvia in North Carolina on 10/08/2011. Trim: 2003 BMW 5-Series 525i, Owned 3 years.
Pros: Classic styling, good power and gas milage, very comfortable and fun to drive.
Cons: Bad cup holders.
Overall review: My car has over 100,000 and still acts like a new car.

Maintenance Hogger by Sanjay on 12/26/2010. Trim: 2003 BMW 5-Series 525i, Owned 7 years.
Pros: Good acceleration.
Cons: This vehicle costs an arm and leg to maintain. Electrical gives persistent problems. It is designed to last some 3-4 years. You have to go to the dealership and they milk every client to death. Horrible experience overall.
Overall review: Bad car to own in the long run. Unreliable and requires huge maintenance costs.

German krapsmanship. by Rolf on 08/01/2005. Trim: 2003 BMW 5-Series 540i, Owned 3 years.
Pros: Great ride and handling.
Cons: Too many niggling problems resulting in too much time at the dealership (10 trips in three years and only three for routine maintenance) for a car in this price range. Waiting lines in the service department should have been the first warning sign. Also, the dealership seemed indifferent, which led me to think that this type of service frequency was typical.
Overall review: Avoid BMW. I will buy Japanese when the warranty is up.

Timeless Classic a True Drivers Car by Rick - Miami on 04/18/2011. Trim: 2003 BMW 5-Series 530i, Owned 8 years.
Pros: The styling is classic BMW. Even after 8-years the car looks fantastic with its traditional lines. My 2003 E39 has the sports package and it makes it look that much better. The car handles great. I have taken it on the track and it handles phenomenally well and keeps pace with new Audis, MB, and BMW's though obviously not as fast. What is also nice about owning this car is that there is a strong enthusiast community that adds to the enjoyment of ownership whether it be aftermarket upgrades or DIY troubleshooting. I recently added a limited slip differential and changed the final gearing. Boy is that fun. Taking corners has never been so exciting.
Cons: Owning the car can get expensive. BMW parts are not cheap and quite honestly the manufacturers maintenance schedule is the minimum especially when it comes to fluid changes. Several small things can get annoying such as pixel repairs and broken cables on the electric seats.
Overall review: I suggest following an Old School maintenance approach to owning this car if you want to keep it longer than 120k miles. Increase the frequency of oil changes is probably the highest point on the list along with changing your fuel filter, differential oil, ATF fluid (with the correct fluid not just any fluid - some will argue the fluid is lifetime). I would also recommend that whoever owns this car also finds a good independent mechanic as the dealer wont do because of their high cost (with the only exception maybe for alignments). Luckily this is probably the last of the viable BMW's where you don't need expensive dealer only equipment to do service on it and it still comes with a dip stick somehow someone thought the newer beamers should be absent of this nifty tool.

An Amazing sportscar with 4 doors. by Nate-Atlanta on 08/16/2007. Trim: 2003 BMW 5-Series 540i, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: This car is a sleeper on the street, no one realizes it has 290 hp/324 ft-lbs of torque. Its a race car, constant power, incredible handling. I bought it 1/2007 and it has the CPO and extendended maintaince. I also have the Msport package (18inch staggered wheels, opened exhaust, sport seats, M suspension, M Trim package), which is very rare with nav. It's one of a kind and would never get rid of it.
Cons: I have the CPO and maintaince and have been to the dealer 3x in the first 8 months, it was all covered except an alignment which i know needs to be down 2x year with the roads in Atlanta. 2 visits were regular maintance (brake flush, coolant flush) no charge, Inspection II- no charge, Alignment $159, windshield washer pump $50 deductible. BMWs require care, preventative maintanence is the way to go. Find a good indy shop after warranty.
Overall review: This car is a dream. Its perfect, its fast and drives like its on rails. The feedback it gives the driver from the road is unduplicated, and the input you give the car and its reaction is amazing. It makes you want to drive more! I have had no out of the ordinary problems and intended to maintain it with more frequent oil changes.........there is no way 1x every 15000 miles (dealer recommended) is realistic. If you are going to keep it, put in the effort.
