Great Commuter Car by Rne on 02/14/2009. Trim: 2003 Volkswagen Golf GL 1.9 TDI, Owned 6 years.
Pros: Great fuel economy. Fun to drive. Lots of torque for the engine size.
Cons: No factory engine block heater. Expensive dealer parts, example $52 for a fuel filter, which makes regular maintenance expensive. Also the timing belt service is a very costly proposition which is required at 100,000km at price tag of close to $1,500 if done properly and associated parts replaced. Failure to replace on schedule risks severe engine damage. Also finding a repair shop with qualified and competent VW diesel mechanics is difficult.
Overall review: Great little commuter car overall, although in the long run a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla is a better value.

Great versatile car. by VW driver, Portola Hills, CA on 12/31/2003. Trim: 2003 Volkswagen Golf GL 2.0, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: I love this car. This is a very versatile car. I've gone on vacations with the family (2 kids) and piled the strollers and luggage in the trunk, or if needed, I can fold down the back seats and buy lumber, buy furnitures or move for friends. It also has great performance for a sub-$16k car. It accerlates fast, corners tights and it looks great.
Cons: I wish it gets betters gas mileage. I current get about 28mpg with a mix of city/highway driving. My previous Honda Civic got at least 35mpg.
Overall review: This is a great car. I love VWs. I have this car now for 6 months and put over 10k miles already. There has been no problems at all. If you're looking for a sub-compact car, you DEFINITELY have to check out the Golf.
