Misunderstood? by Canadian Landy on 11/03/2009. Trim: 2002 Land Rover Freelander S, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Style, Standard features--resale value
Cons: resale value, no arm rest, weird cupholders, some minor rattles and HVAC noise
Overall review: Bought this truck used just four months ago. The previous owner maintained it at a Land Rover Dealership in the Vancouver are. The only thing things that had to be done were the timing belt (3 of them) replacement and a four wheel brake job which cost a pretty penny. But after all that is said and done, the truck seems reliable and fun to drive. I don't understand what all the hoopla is all about with all the complaints.

2002 Land Rover Freelander, Maintenance Nightmare! by Kathy, Chicago on 12/22/2008. Trim: 2002 Land Rover Freelander SE, Owned 2 years.
Pros: Most woud not agree but I kind of like the boxy exterior look of the thing. I also always thought of a Land Rover as being a 'tank' of a car that would last forever.
Cons: This car is a maintenance nightmare! Please do not buy it, I plan to unload mine as soon as I put a second transmission in it. I'm now sure that the person who unloaded the one I have knew they had a trans problem when they sold it too. A window motor (electric rear passenger) blew to the tune of $150.00 This is as I said the second transmission I'm having to look for, it took four months and two transmissions (the first replacement we found did not work at all) last time, I can only cringe when I think about it. Oil changes (with no 'extras' like checking trans fluid) cost $80.00 in my area and the car needs them regularly.
Overall review: Please, please, please do not buy this car, warranty companies I tried to get to cover it after the first transmission wanted $7,800.00 and told me that the high cost was because statistically the car was expected to cost an owner about $16,000.00 in repairs during the life of the car. I had just had a rebuilt transmission put in it so I decided to just keep it and now I'll regret it until I can unload the thing myself!

Worst car ever built by Norcal on 10/07/2008. Trim: 2002 Land Rover Freelander SE, Owned 1 year.
Pros: compact easy to maneuver, city or rugged terrain
Cons: no available parts
Overall review: I bought A used 02 Freelander, in less than 2 years since I got it, it just broke down. The engine blew up. I have put in less than 12,000 miles on it, not even reached 65,000 miles total.I had it brought to the dealer's service center, they could not find a replacement engine right away. They said they could provide one in a couple of months, for 7 grand not including installation and other parts needed. They have found a used one, still will cost to $7,000. I called the Customer Care Department and they pretty much said, "buyers beware", I have to pay for the repairs or bring it somewhere else to fix if I think thier charges is very high. The value of the car is less than the value for the repair. I believe this has a problem aready before they sold this car to the US market. I am still waiting for somebody from the LR Corp. to call me back to help me with this situation. I believed the sales person who said that it was in very go od condition, no problem with maintenace issues.
