Solid & Dependable by Old Timer on 10/17/2010. Trim: 1992 Ford Explorer XLT 4-Door 4WD, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: It's ability to get me where I need to go. My Explorer has been good to me. Not really anything about this little gem that I don't like.
Cons: Seat is a bit uncomfortable on long trips. Mine has limited slip front & rear and does take a little thinking when on ice. I had one window motor go out at 218,000 so I replace them all.
Overall review: Treat it right, it treats you right. It's no monster off-roader but it will get you out of tight spots. Buy high quality brakes shoes & pads. Run synthetics (royal purple) in ALL cases. I bought mine new in '92' with 8 miles on it. It now has 368,000! I live on the west coast, would not hesitate to drive to the east tomorrow. I drive it decent and do not expect it to pull heavy loads. Motor is small (V6) Trans flush every 30,000 (without fail!) Filled with synthetic fluid, very expensive but very worth it. My tranny shifts like it did the day I brought it home. I also changed ALL U-joints to the greasable type at 20,000 miles and have NEVER had to replace one. If you have a bum Explorer? It is because it has not been maintained and treated well. Mine has and it is rock solid dependable. Keep the kids from behind the wheel and it will last forever.

a real beastie suv by crashdummiee from iowa on 09/06/2010. Trim: 1992 Ford Explorer XLT 4-Door 4WD, Owned 3 years.
Pros: good solid family 4X4. i bought mine wrecked sitting on 1 rim with tie-rods that looked like horseshoes for about $600 dollars.the body looks like it was side swiped on both sides with an amazing amount of rust where the undercarrage and wheelwells are supposed to be. after very minamal work and another $500 i locked in the fourwheel and drove through a snowdrift into a very large snow covered field to a gravel road to the main road in a blinding storm and home no problems.
Cons: the transmissions break easy in this older series frd suv as i have found out. the auto hubs are garbage and strip out way to easy. manual hubs are a must on this model explorer if you depend on it to get your family around safe.
Overall review: ford almost did it rite with this one. with a little aftermarket tweaking the 4.0 v6 in this ride can get 16 to 18 mpg. dont use the overdrive until 65 not 55 and the transmission will last longer also. 4x4 works great and will climb a tree . great ride for the $$$$ they are getting older and parts are not getting any cheaper so make sure if your gonna buy one you can afford to fix it when it breaks. it is a 4x4 so it will break something eventually.

Unreliable but fun. by Diagnosed on 04/26/2010. Trim: 1992 Ford Explorer XL 4-Door 4WD, Owned 1 year.
Pros: It handled well, had a lot of drive, interior was nice, clean, everything was easy to get at. Outside body was pretty sturdy, it weathered a rear-ending with nary a buckle from the back, besides a dent in the bumper. Felt like a tank.
Cons: Reliability was horrible -- at 90k miles even. Every problem that could happen to the truck did (see MSN reliability page for this car, they're not lying). I couldn't afford to fix it. The mileage is dismal, especially when things start failing.
Overall review: If you want an old SUV for some reason, and have the money for some inevitable repairs, it's a fun ride, not gonna lie. But be prepared for some breakdowns, keep a cell handy, and get to know your salvage yards. It was a heartbreak in its final days, for sure.

Keep 'em Runnin by Jonie on 08/25/2009. Trim: 1992 Ford Explorer Sport 2WD, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: Bought vehicle new--first 4WD. Love it and hate to part with it. It has been very reliable over the years. Had new rocker panels installed couple years ago--rusted out and 4WD hubs redone. Airconditioning quite a number of years ago--but mechanically, it keeps going. Has l63,000 miles. Still love it.
Cons: Rocker panels replaced--has foam rubber in door panels-(sound deadening and water sponge)--not a good idea--where are the Ford engineers????
Overall review: No regrets in purchasing this vehicle--still love it. Has been reliable.

Overall review: overall i believe that this vehile has been somewhat reliable. I do not believe that i would personally recommend this vehicle for a family car but it would be an excellent vehile for a teen in school as a first car. It has had its problems and the one major problem that i have been introduced to is the radius arm bushings. They are poorly designed and they need to be replaced quite often. I am on my 4th set and they are not cheap by any means. overall i think that this car is ok.
