Founded in 1914 in Bologna, Italy, by Alferi, Ettore and Ernesto Maserati, the company built a 16-cylinder V4 that debuted at the Italian Grand Prix in 1929, setting a world speed record for its class at more than 150 mph. In 1939 the company moved to Modena, where it has been located ever since. Citroen took over Maserati in 1968, and in 1975 Alejandro DeTomaso became the fourth owner. In 1993 Fiat took ownership, and four years later total ownership was handed over to Ferrari. After a ten-year absence from this market, 2002 marked Maserati's return to North America.
