Buick's namesake, David Dunbar Buick, began work on gasoline engines as early as 1895, and by 1903 the Buick Motor Company was incorporated. In 1904 Flint, MI, industrialist William Durant took control of the company and built on Buick's success to create General Motors in 1908. Firmly established as an automotive icon, Buick recently celebrated a centennial of building vehicles with, in the company's words, "Premium American Style."
