Henrik Fisker has been responsible for the designs of the BMW Z8, Aston Martin DB9 and the upcoming Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Now the designer has ventured off and started his own company, which is bringing back the art of coachbuilding.
Fisker Coachbuild was founded this past January by Fisker and business partner Bernhard Koehler. The company is taking production cars and creating unique designs that replace the original bodywork as well as the interiors. Mechanicals remain largely untouched and manufacturer warranties remain intact; however, clients do have the option of upgrading engines or other components with a Performance Plus Package.
Two production cars will be chosen for coachbuilding each yearthe first year the company will feature vehicles built on the BMW 6-Series/M6 and the Mercedes-Benz SL55.
The M6-based vehicle is called the Fisker Latigo CS, while the SL-based car is the Fisker Tramonto. The Tramonto on display featured the additional performance package, which upgrades the brakes and increases the power of the SL-55's engine to 610 horsepower.
Only 150 vehicles will be built on each of the production models, then next year two more production models will be chosen for coachbuilding.
Clients choose paint color, interior trim and, of course, the features they want on the production car. All designs are unique; however, every Fisker automobile will feature the same trademark grille, inspired by the silhouette of the F/A-22 Raptor fighter jet.
The cost of the Fisker transformation is $128,000, but the original vehicle must be purchased as well. According to Cristina Cheever, vice president of Fisker marketing and communications, approximately 60 percent of Fisker automobiles will be sold in North America.
Response to the designs in private showings has been quite favorable, and now that the cars have been shown publicly for the first time it's likely the run of 150 for each car will go quickly.
